Our Story

What started as a quiet girls’ night in nearly 6 years ago quickly changed course when Jokubas and a friend crashed the evening—a final hurrah before he left for the U.S. Navy just weeks later. The night was filled with games, banter, and a few too many drinks, though Keara wasn’t exactly swept off her feet by Jokubas’s charm. She claims she spent most of the night rolling her eyes at his attempts, while he still insists to this day that she tried to kiss him during a late-night kitchen chat. You choose who to believe. Though sparks didn’t fly at first, Jokubas soon found a way to get Keara’s number, and their playful banter slowly turned into something more. With his departure only two weeks away, they kept things light—sharing time with friends, knowing the timing wasn’t right for something serious. On Jokubas’s last night in town, Keara hosted a small farewell gathering before they went their separate ways. Months passed in silence while Jokubas was in boot camp, cut off from the outside world. Keara would hear secondhand updates through friends who received his letters, clinging onto those small glimpses of how he was doing. Until one night, she secretly stole the return address off one of the letters and decided to write to him herself. That single letter changed everything. What began as cautious words on paper grew into a steady rhythm of letters, then long, late-night phone calls that stretched until morning. When Jokubas came home for the holidays, Keara picked him up from the airport—and from that first moment, they both knew their connection was something worth fighting for. For years, they built their love from 3,000 miles apart—Keara in Northern Virginia, Jokubas in San Diego—navigating time zones, distance, and schedules that never seemed to line up. Every visit was full of adventure and never failed to end in a tearful goodbye. When Jokubas’s contract ended, he offered Keara two options: he could move back home with his parents, or he could move in with her, and they could "finally figure this thing out". Despite the entirety of their relationship being cross-country, Keara cleared a drawer in her tiny 600-square-foot apartment. Jokubas was finally coming home. Since then, life together has been nothing short of sweet. Together the pair has fostered five dogs, traveled across the country, earned degrees, celebrated promotions, and even Jokubas’s U.S. citizenship. They can’t wait to see where the future takes them. Keara and Jokubas are endlessly grateful for everyone who loves their love just as much as they do, and they look forward to celebrating on their big night!
