Our Love Story

POV: Kayleigh

It was the first weekend of my sophomore year of college and I was finally going through Panhellenic recruitment. I'd been looking forward to joining a sorority all throughout high school and I finally was getting the chance. Little did I know, I would find more than lifelong friends; I would also find a lifelong partner. Summer and I will both tell you that we don't remember meeting. During those first weeks after recruitment, new and old members meet so many people that few stand out. I do remember when I first noticed Summer. We were sitting on the couch in the Phi Mu house, both cracking up over nothing. I looked over at her smiling face and thought "wow, Summer is really pretty". Throughout the rest of the fall and spring semesters, we spent more time together, eating many meals in the dining hall and chatting while walking to class, and I began to fall. What started out as a little crush blossomed into a friendship with feelings, at least on my end - I had no idea if Summer felt anything. At the end of the spring semester, I decided to write her a letter telling her how I felt. I handed it to her and promptly ran away, leaving her confused on the doorstep of her house, holding a letter that contained my entire 20 year old heart. That night, she texted me, offering to meet up and talk about the letter. As we sat on the couches at Muhlenberg's coffee shop, the ever beloved Java Joe's, I anxiously awaited her bringing it up, but she never did. Later, she told me she was waiting for me to bring it up, since she "set up the conversations". We have now asked many of our friends who should have brought it up, and all but one said Summer (thanks Eva!). Thus, our friendship continued. We grew closer and closer and, by the end of the fall semester of my junior year, I considered Summer to be one of my closest friends, aided by a semester of sharing a suite. However I was off to Italy for a semester abroad and Summer would be graduating at the end of the year. The road ahead was a mystery but I could not bear the thought of living a life without Summer in it. During my senior year, we talked every Sunday night, replacing our weekly scheduled hangout. Then, COVID hit. Everyone was home with very little to do and our conversations picked up in frequency. We found ourselves talking almost every night. By May of 2020, we were video chatting every day. Through it all, I continued to have feelings for Summer. On May 19th, 2020, we were on a video chat discussing soulmates. I had told Summer I believed in platonic soulmates (looking at you, Brie), and they asked if I thought we were soulmates. Without thinking, I immediately answered "yes", to which Summer agreed. They then asked me if we were dating. I hadn't thought we were dating, but I desperately wanted to be. When I coyly told them I didn't know if we were, they asked if I wanted to be. Again, I immediately said "yes". I could not tell you the rest of the conversation, only that I was on cloud nine. Later, I asked if I had made that decision for both of us, and Summer told me that while yes, I kind of did, they wouldn't have asked if they didn't want to be dating. This trend continued throughout our relationship, with Summer sourcing options and letting me make the final decision (they found over two hundred wedding venues, which I narrowed down to five to tour). Because we started dating during lockdown, the first year was almost entirely virtual. We saw each other twice before deciding to move in together, which sounds crazy, but we also had three years of friendship and experience being roommates to back our decision. As scary as the move to Virginia was, it certainly paid off. On our third anniversary, I proposed to Summer, and though they joked the whole time, they did say yes. Two days later, Summer proposed to me, right before we went to Disney with my family. Now, after years of friendship and love, we are so excited to invite you to celebrate with us!
