A quick hike offering both beginner and advanced routes to breathtaking views of Lake Superior, Marquette and the Northwoods; Sugarloaf Mountain is located about six miles north of downtown Marquette on CR 550. Hawley becomes CR 550. Drive about 4.0 miles on Hawley Street/CR-550 to the parking area. A sign that reads “Sugarloaf Mountain” marks the parking area and is easily visible from CR 550.
Lounge next to Marquette’s historic “Ore Dock”, play frisbee, walk by the lake and watch sailboats. There’s also a large wooden playground and an ice cream shop!
One of Marquette’s most famous shorelines, the Black Rock Cliffs offer tropical-like rock formations and wild, jagged coastlines. A Mecca for cliff-jumping enthusiasts, August is prime time and the water is cold but almost as warm as it will be all year! Don’t forget your suit if you’re feeling brave and only jump if the lake is calm and others are also jumping!
A nature park which can supply hours of exploration and fun! Another playground is here and the west side of the park (aptly name Sunset Point) offers MQTs best sunset spot. There is also picnic areas, ice cream shop and hiking trails!
If you just need a walk in the woods of if you happen to bring your bike for the weekend; the South Trails are one of the Bride and Groom’s favorite Marquette locations. MQT is fortunate to have miles and miles of some of the worlds best single track mountain biking. The majority is accessible from Benson’s Grade and all turns downhill are yours for the taking! This trailhead has picnic area, trail maps and complimentary bike pump.
“Junkyard Art” Park just outside of the Marquette city limits. This attraction can be either walked or driven through depending on stamina and time. Sculptures made of metal “junk” repurposed into art with attitude.
