If you plan to bring groceries to the island, please pack them in large tupperwear bins with secure lids and be sure to label them with your name, contact info, house you're staying at. These will be loaded onto the dollies along with your luggage and then transported onto the ferry so securely taping close the lids might be a good idea as well. If you want to avoid bringing groceries to the island, there is a grocery store on the island called the Maritime Market. It is open Monday - Sunday from 8am - 8pm. It is a full grocery with beer & wine, but no liquor. Liquor will need to be purchased on the mainland and brought over if you so desire.
The ferries run once per hour. They leave the mainland from Deep Point Marina every hour on the hour, beginning at 7am M-F and beginning at 6am Sa-Su. They leave the island every hour on the half hour, beginning at 7:30am M-F and beginning at 6:30am Sa-Su. The ferry ride is about 25 mins long.
No... the ferries are first come first serve and can hold approximately 150 ppl. Tickets are $23 for an adult round trip, $12 for a child aged 3-12. Children under 3 are free. When you purchase your tickets, you'll receive 2 passes... 1 to go to the island and 1 to come back. You do need to make reservations for a tram ride (both for your arrival to the island and for your departure) however and you should do this as soon as you've booked your accommodations. You can make your tram reservations by calling 910.457.5003. Once you've checked into your house, you can use your golf cart to get around for the rest of your time on the island.
Feel free to come whenever you like, make it a vacation! Most rental homes will open up by 3pm on the day of check in. Once you've made your housing reservations, you should book your flights and your tram reservations. Please note the ferry schedule when making your flight reservations. For example, don't book a flight that gets to Wilmington after 10pm because you won't make the last ferry to BHI which is 11pm. Also, don't book an early morning departure flight on Sunday because the earliest you'll be able to get to Wilmington airport is about 9am. We recommend booking afternoon arrival flights and afternoon departure flights. https://www.baldheadisland.com/island/ferry/
Take a look at our "Things to Do" page for links to various activities, but just to give you an idea... - climb the lighthouse - go to the beach - golf the BHI Club - golf not your thing, the BHI Club and Shoals Club pools are fun too - groceries available at the Maritime Market. The market sells beer & wine but no liquor. - restaurants we love: Mojo's (aka Jule's), Delphinas, Sandpiper IceCream & Coffee, Shoals Club Aqua Bar & Lattitudes, BHI Club's Grille Room & Horizons, Will O' the Wisp wine bar, Honey's BBQ, Maritime Market's deli - visit the Island Conservancy to learn about their turtle conservation program - hike one of the many island nature trails - kayak, surf or sail through the island's marsh - rent a bicycle and cruise the island
Most rental homes come with 1-2 golf carts that you can use throughout your stay. But first you must get to the house, which you will do by taking a free tram from the ferry landing. Each ferry ticket includes a free tram ride to your destination but they do require reservations ahead of time. When you're ready to leave the island, the tram will come pick you up about 30-40 mins prior to your scheduled ferry departure time. You will also need to make reservations for this pick up ahead of time. It is recommended that you make your tram reservations, coming and going, as soon as you've booked your housing. You can make tram reservations by calling 910.457.5003.
