Creative Naming, Great Food, Better Atmosphere
Diez de Sollano y Dávalos 16, Zona Centro, Centro +52 415 154 7862 A local and tourist favorite. Beautiful setting with chic fusion cooking in an 18th-century mansion courtyard & dining room. Try to make a reservation if possible!
Fine Dining and Creative Cuisine
101 Quebrada +52 415 152 0941
A favorite for dinner. Reservations necessary.
Cuna de Allende 3, Zona Centro +52 415-688-1405 Incredible food. Smack dab in the middle of the city with breathtaking views of the Parroquia.
The "New" Favorite of the City. Reservations Recommended.
Aldama 53, Zona Centro We have not yet tried Moxi, but we hear great things. And we LOVE Hotel Matilda (but hate that the hotel booked out a year ago for our wedding weekend -- yes, this is a gentle reminder to book your accommodations ASAP!).
Mike and Katie Went Back Three Days/Nights in a Row.
Diez de Sollano y Dávalos 14, Zona Centro Lively, hip, energized rooftop restaurant and bar that is beautifully decorated and often hosts a very talented DJ. Try the guac and spicy mezcal cocktails--and pretty much everything on the menu. Like most things, La Unica is extremely convenient to where all of you are staying!
A Cindy + Katie Special
Hospicio 35, Zona Centro Cindy and Katie still can't get over how much fun they had with the waitstaff here. Can't even remember the food. May have been the mezcal shots. But it is a winner chicken dinner.
Breakfast/Lunch Cozy; Arrive Hungry, Great Mexican Food
34 Salida a Celaya Trendy/cozy/hip spot in the center of the city. Healthy and diverse menu with breakfast and lunch served all day. Should be fine walking in. Would be your dad's favorite - or something.
Adorable Breakfast Vibes and Great Coffee.
Expect a line if you don't show up right when they open. There are two locations -- one is just a coffee shop (albeit worth a duck in), so if you are hungry for lavender waffles, make sure you are walking to the correct location (below)! Both are centrally located. + Breakfast and Coffee: Calle del Dr Ignacio Hernandez Macias 87, Zona Centro. + Coffee Only: Cjon. de Loreto 48 A, Zona Centro, Centro
Traditional Mexican food with views for days.
Cuna de Allende 13, Zona Centro A favorite by all. Here, in the shadow of La Parroquia, you'll find some of the best-prepared traditional Mexican food in town. The guacamole is great, as are any of the enchiladas, the chiles rellenos, and the Yucatan specialty, cochinita pibíl (slow-roasted pork). Top it off with the homemade flan, a delicious preparation of an old standby, and celebrate another fabulous San Miguel day with one of the well-prepared margaritas. The sweeping cityscape, backed by mountains, is another enchantment.
New Views - Above Casa 1810 Hotel.
Hidalgo 8, Zona Centro Great rooftop bar and restaurant close to the main square. I know, another rooftop. The views are stunning and the food is very good. Try the beet salad and octopus/pulpo entree.
BREAKFAST. DONE. GET THE CHILAQUILES.
Made it way too easy for you.
Deemed a "hidden gem." Go for Sunset. Make Reservations.
Umarán 6, Zona Centro Rooftop bar and restaurant. Great for happy hour drinks.
(El Bar) (Pero Comida Tambien)
Pre-Dinner Drinks
Hospicio 35, Zona Centro, 37700 San Miguel de Allende Cindy and Katie blindly followed their waiter to the Blue Bar after enjoying the most amazing service and food at Belmond's restaurant -- Andaza -- and proceeded to learn the proper way to take a mezcal shot. They each royally screwed that up, so they just had to keep taking more until they got it right. Shucks. This place is exceptional. Go before dinner. Tell them you know us. We will be back.
Tequila Tequila!
18 Recreo +52 646 330 4678 Amazing (like, really, really good) tequila tastings in one of the original homes of San Miguel de Allende. A must! Casa Dragones is a small batch tequila producer from Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico. It was founded in 2009 by Bertha González Nieves, the first woman to be certified as ‘Maestra Tequilera.'
"The Smallest Tequila Bar in the World"
Relox 18, Zona Centro (in Dôce 18 Concept House). Not to be confused with La Casa Dragones - Above. Another popular tasting experience is in Dragones' itty bitty tasting room located in Dôce 18 Concept House, right in the center of town. It's known as the “Smallest Tequila Bar in the World” and stays open 7 days a week. Tequila Casa Dragones = the original tequila of San Miguel de Allende. When in Rome, right?! They offer a range of experiences, from mixology classes to professional tastings with a seasoned tequila expert or sommelier. Last time we checked, they are also doing culinary and mixology experiences at various beautiful locations, e.g., at the restaurant Moxi located in the Matilda Hotel.
Screaming Katie's Name. 100+ mezcal varieties.
Recreo 88, Zona Centro Bar/restaurant focusing on Mezcal. Over 100 different bottles and a variety of mezcal-based cocktails.
The funkiest shop and restaurant there ever was.
Canal 16, Zona Centro You should really check it out. The shop underneath is wild. We adore the geometry and stay for the art deco. Oh, and the cocktail with the picture-perfect depiction of San Miguel - what. Let us know when you know. A mixture of a brasserie and a steakhouse. The bar was recovered from an old canteen, which today offers an exquisite selection of whiskeys and classic cocktails.
Because we couldn't help but to include a New Orleans bar.
Hidalgo 12, Zona Centro Yes, it may feel silly to stop in at a NOLA-themed bar in a sophisticated central Mexican town, but San Miguel is known for its international cuisine, and NOLA...is...international, right? We sort of hate to admit that we sort of love it and have sort of returned numerous times. Katie even got a hat. It is ugly. But she wears it with pride. The margs are delicious. Wouldn't bother with the food. Let's keep this in the "Bar" Category.
Sunsets and Brunch (Simultaneously)
11 Nemesio Diez +52 415 152 9700 Incredible views, fantastic for Sunday brunch or happy hour/sunset watching atop the Rosewood Hotel. Fills up quickly, hustle over.
Large Rooftop Bar. For the Late-Night Loud Music Nights.
Calle del Dr Ignacio Hernandez Macias #91, Zona Centro
Quince, Quince, Quince, Everyone Loves Quince
Cuna de Allende 15, Zona Centro, Centro Hip (maybe TOO hip - expect a long wait) rooftop venue offering an eclectic international menu & DJs in a chic space that has incredible city and Parroquia views. I mean, it's basically touching the Parroquia.
