Governor’s Island is a peaceful, car-free island between Brooklyn and Manhattan with stunning views of the city. To visit, take the NYC Ferry (South Brooklyn line) from Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Schedules and info here: www.ferry.nyc/routes-and-schedules/south-brooklyn/ Once on the island, enjoy a day of biking (rentals available), walking, or relaxing in the parks. Explore the island’s history at Fort Jay, Castle Williams, and Liggett Hall, or dine along the water. Keep an eye out for rotating art installations and public events, or book a session at QC NY Spa for some relaxation. Governor’s Island is also home to New York City’s Harbor School, a maritime-focused public high school, and a number of ecological and preservation projects. (Fun fact: Katie has volunteered with the Billion Oyster Project on Governor's Island to help rebuild oyster reefs and improve marine ecosystems in New York Harbor!)
DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is a vibrant Brooklyn neighborhood where historic warehouses meet modern shops and galleries, all set against iconic views of the Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. We reccommend starting in Brooklyn Bridge Park, where you can relax on a blanket, go roller skating, watch ferries come and go, or head up to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade for sweeping views. (Fun fact: Carlos works on the rehabilitation project for the highway running under the promenade!) Walk toward the Brooklyn Bridge to grab a bite at the Time Out Market and check out Jane’s Carousel just outside. Then explore the Manhattan Bridge area—shop at Brooklyn Flea (hours are limited, so check online) or wander through nearby art galleries. When you need a break, The Randolph is a nice stop for drinks and games (from arcade classics to featherbowling!).
Red Hook is a laid-back, waterfront Brooklyn neighborhood known for its cobblestone streets and harbor views. Grab a bite at one of our favorite Red Hook spots (Defonte’s Sandwiches, Red Hook Lobster Pound, or the famous Red Hook Tavern burger) then head to the waterfront for a cool treat at Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pie. After dessert, stick around for Statue of Liberty views at Valentino Pier, Red Hook Cidery, Red Hook Winery, or our personal favorite, Strong Rope Brewery, which also happens to be the perfect place to catch the sunset. Later in the evening, stop by Sunny’s Bar to enjoy some live music (check the schedule online - or just walk in!).
Prospect Park is Brooklyn’s largest park, packed with things to see and do. Stroll through its paths, bring a blanket to relax, or enjoy attractions like the Prospect Park Carousel and LeFrak Center at Lakeside for rowboats and roller skating. On Sundays, don’t miss the popular Smorgasburg food festival. You can also plan a visit to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden or Prospect Park Zoo, both within the park, or explore the Brooklyn Museum just outside. (Fun fact: Carlos loved having birthday parties in prospect park as a kid, especially at the Zoo!)
