Crete has two international airports you can fly into:
Heraklion (HER) – About 80 km / ~1 hr 15 min drive to Rethymno. The largest airport on the island with the most flight options. Chania (CHQ) – About 60 km / ~1 hr 15 min drive to Rethymno. A smaller airport, fewer flight options. Either airport works well—choose whichever has the best flights for you. We typically fly into Heraklion, as there are more flight options there.
Once you arrive, you have a few options:
Rent a Car Highly recommended if you want flexibility to explore Crete. There is so much to see and do on the island that is most easily accessible by private car. Rental cars are available at both airports through major companies (Hertz, Avis, Sixt) and local agencies like Luxtrans Crete. Roads between cities are good, but be prepared for some winding mountain drives. You will notice that much of the main highway (known locally as the "National Road") is one lane in each direction with a generous shoulder. Locals use the shoulder to allow other cars room to pass / overtake them in a safer way. There are speed cameras along this road, so keep an eye on your GPS and the signs on the roadway for notice. Private Transfer or Taxi A comfortable and stress-free option if you would prefer not to drive. Expect ~€90–100 for a one-way transfer. Recommended companies TBD.
