Things To Do

Crete is the largest island in Greece and has so much to offer. We hope that you extend your trip and explore some of our favorite spots on the island. Below are some places to visit, both local to Rethymno and in other areas to help you plan more of your trip! As always, please feel free to reach out to us by text to ask questions or for more recommendations!
Elounda

Elounda

Schisma Eloundas, Greece

One of our favorite areas in Crete is Elounda (Ελούντα) - a charming seaside town on the island’s northeast coast near Agios Nikolaos. Known for its calm waters, luxury resorts, and fascinating history, Elounda offers a mix of relaxation and adventure. Things to do: Spinalonga Island – A short boat ride away, this former Venetian fortress and leper colony is one of Crete’s most moving historic sites. Beautiful Beaches – From the sandy main beach in Elounda to the pebbled shores of Plaka and the hidden cove of Kolokytha. Ancient Olous – The ruins of a sunken ancient city can still be seen beneath the water. Waterfront Taverns – Fresh seafood and classic Cretan dishes right on the bay. Relax & Indulge – Luxury resorts, spas, and boat trips make it a wonderful spot to unwind. Travel time: About 2 hours 15 minutes to Rethymno by car. We recommend staying in a hotel in Elounda if you plan to visit, as there is too much to see for a day trip!

Chania

Chania

Chania, Greece

If you’re flying into Chania Airport or want to explore western Crete, the city of Chania is a must-see. Blending Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek influences, it’s one of the most picturesque towns on the island. Highlights: Old Venetian Harbor – Wander cobbled streets, see the 16th-century lighthouse, and enjoy cafés right on the waterfront. Markets & Boutiques – Shop for local crafts, leather goods, olive oil, and Cretan delicacies. Nearby Beaches – Easy day trips to Balos Lagoon, Elafonisi, and Falasarna, some of the most famous beaches in Greece. Nature & Hiking – The dramatic Samaria Gorge and White Mountains are perfect for outdoor lovers. Food & Nightlife – From seaside tavernas to lively bars in the old town, Chania has endless dining options. Travel time: About 1 hour 15 minutes to Rethymno by car.

Balos Beach

Balos Beach

Greece

Balos beach (Παραλία Μπάλος) is one of our favorite beaches on the island. Be prepared to drive your car on an unpaved, narrow, rocky road up the mountain - not for the faint of heart. You will park in a lot at the top and walk down into Balos Bay - a breathtaking view. We recommend you get there early to ensure you get parking in the lot, and to enjoy your time there before the ferries from Kissamos come in. Plan to leave Chania between 7-8am for the best visit to Balos Beach. Travel Time: It takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to get from the Chania Port to Balos Beach. The drive on the unpaved road is slow and the later in the day you travel, the longer it will take to get there. Alternatively, there are ferries directly to the small port at Balos Lagoon from Kissamos that allow you to avoid the hike down.

Preveli Palm Forest

Preveli Palm Forest

Foinikas, 740 60, Greece

For a unique day trip from Rethymno, consider visiting the Preveli Palm Forest and the Preveli Monastery. Preveli Monastery Perched on a hilltop with breathtaking sea views, the Preveli Monastery is a place of deep historical and spiritual significance. The monastery consists of two main building complexes: the Lower (Kato) Monastery of Saint John the Baptist and the Rear (Piso) Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, which is in operation today. Preveli Palm Forest Located at the mouth of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, this lush palm grove is one of Crete’s most unique natural wonders. The easy 0.8-mile (1.3 km) hike through the forest leads you to a tranquil river and a secluded beach. It's a perfect spot for a swim! For a more challenging hike, text Anita for info on the hike we did from a taverna at the top of the gorge, down to the beach (where you can swim and grab a beer) and back up the gorge! Travel Time: The drive from Rethymno to Preveli takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

Loutro

Loutro

Loutro, Greece

Loutro is on Crete’s south coast - a tiny fishing village. Only accessible by boat or on foot, it’s one of the few places in Crete where there are no cars, giving it a truly peaceful and untouched atmosphere. You will find whitewashed houses and tavernas line a calm bay of crystal-clear turquoise water. Swim or take a boat to nearby gems like Sweetwater Beach (Glyka Nera) or Marmara Beach. Hike up to hilltop ruins, enjoy fresh seafood by the water, or just relax in the quiet rhythm of village life. Travel Notes: Getting there: Boats run daily from Chora Sfakion, about a 2-hour drive from Rethymno. Best experience: While a day trip is possible, an overnight stay lets you soak in the tranquility after the day-trippers leave. Though we haven't made out way to Loutro yet, this is on our must visit list!
