The first State Park we went to together! Has accessible, paved walking trails to Upper and Middle Falls; a short flight of stairs down to Lower Falls; a mile and a half or so hike in either direction on the river will bring you to Fifth Falls or down to Lake Superior.
A State Park vehicle pass will give you access to the lakeshore and trails. Day Hill offers a great view of the lighthouse and surrounding area. For those who like the history aspect, the MN Historical Society has available tours of the lighthouse and the lighthouse grounds. http://www.mnhs.org/splitrock
Museum tours do have an admission fee, but there are some fun, free things to do in the area. Walking down to the lighthouse at the end of the breakwater, the historic tugboat in the harbor, and a nearby train on display could be fun for those with kids!
Where we got engaged! With everything from sightseeing to eating or shopping — there’s a lot to do in the area! Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center is a fun, free option that has history and some interactive activities for the kids. For those with a sweet tooth, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is within walking distance!
