Things To Do

Near Braga

Known as the “Rome of Portugal,” Braga is one of the country’s oldest cities and a fascinating blend of history, culture, and charm. Its grand baroque churches and lively squares make it a beautiful place to wander, while the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary—with its dramatic baroque stairway and sweeping views—is an absolute must-see. Beyond the historic sites, Braga has a youthful energy thanks to its large student population, meaning cafés, restaurants, and bars are always buzzing.

Near Porto | Douro Valley

Portugal’s northern gem is equal parts romantic and vibrant. By day, stroll its winding streets, sip world-class wines, and explore the historic Port Wine Houses that gave the city its name. By night, the city comes alive with a buzzing dining and bar scene—perfect for hopping between wine bars and sunset terraces. Don’t miss the famous riverside happy hours and unforgettable sunset parties that light up the Douro Riverfront. The rolling hills and terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley are straight out of a postcard—and extra special for us, since it’s where we got engaged! A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the valley offers breathtaking scenery along the Douro River and some of Portugal’s best wine tastings. Many tours offer private pick-ups from Porto, and for a truly magical experience, consider a sailboat ride between wineries—it’s as dreamy as it sounds.

Near Lisbon | Sintra | Cascais

Portugal’s capital is a lively mix of old-world charm and modern energy. Spend your days exploring historic castles, flea markets, and grand squares, then refuel with the city’s famous pastries (yes, you need to try a pastel de nata). At night, Lisbon buzzes with rooftop bars, cozy taverns, and fine dining spots that make the city’s food scene unforgettable. Just outside Lisbon lies Sintra, a fairy-tale mountain town dotted with castles, palaces, and lush gardens. Perched high above the Atlantic, it feels like stepping into another era. Highlights include the colorful Pena Palace and the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira, but honestly, the whole town is magic. For a change of pace, head to Cascais, a chic seaside town just 30 minutes from Lisbon. With its golden beaches, bustling marina, and fresh seafood restaurants, it’s the perfect place for a relaxed day in the sun. If you’re feeling lucky, the town is also home to Portugal’s most famous casino.

Algarve

Down south, the Algarve region offers a completely different vibe: dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters, and a Mediterranean feel that’s perfect for slowing down. Hike along coastal trails, enjoy world-class seafood, or charter a boat to explore hidden caves and grottos. With its resorts, beaches, and romantic landscapes, the Algarve is a dream spot to unwind.

Travel Tips

Getting around Portugal is easier than you might think! Trains and buses connect most major cities (Porto ↔ Lisbon is just a few hours by train), but renting a car is the best option if you want flexibility for exploring day trips or the Algarve’s coastal gems. Rideshares like Uber and Bolt are widely available in Lisbon and Porto, making city travel stress-free. Portugal is also wonderfully walkable—pack comfy shoes for cobblestone streets! English is commonly spoken, but learning a few Portuguese basics (like obrigado/obrigada for “thank you”) goes a long way. And of course, don’t forget: late dinners are the norm here, so embrace the local rhythm and enjoy long evenings of food, wine, and conversation.

5 Can't Miss Experiences in Portugal
