Question

What do I need to do before I travel to Greece?

Answer

- You will need a passport. No need to apply for a tourist visa. Make sure your passport is VALID for at least 6 MONTHS after your return date. - Get an international drivers license if you plan to rent a car. You can get one at AAA. - Learn some basic greek words and phrases to be polite. - Contact your cellphone carrier to get information about international usage fees and data plans. - Bring a reusable water bottle. Greece in the summer is hot and dry! - Purchase Euro outlet adapter. Greece has different outlets for electricity. Cheap options are available on Amazon, or at Walmart or TJ MAXX. - Make sure any device you use does not need a voltage transformer! In Greece the standard voltage is 230V (vs. 120V in the US) which means your electric appliances will burn out if they are not DUAL voltage! Check the little tag that hangs off your hair dryer or straightener to make sure. - Tell your bank(s) you will be traveling so you can use your credit/debit cards.

Question

What other random information do I absolutely need to know if traveling to Greece?

Answer

- There are tolls driving down to Gytheio! Have a 20 EUR bill handy, break that at the first toll station, and you should be good to go. - Due to very old and sensitive plumbing in Greece, they do not put toilet paper or paper of any kind in the toilet. The only thing flushable is what comes directly out of your body. So, yes, this means wipe, and put the toilet paper in the trash bin next to the toilet. You get used to it, seriously. - There are ATM's around Greece that you can withdraw money from. Contact your bank and ask what their fees are for withdrawing money abroad. You can always exchange some USD to Euros in advance in the United States, or at the airport upon arrival (although this does cost more overall). We highly recommend having cash as many places do not take credit/debit cards. - If you do use your card and are prompted to pay in Euros or USD, always pick Euros. If you pick USD, you will get a crappy pre-determined exchange rate and always end up paying more.
