In traditional Chinese weddings, gifting money in red envelopes, known as hóngbāo (红包), is a significant custom. This practice symbolizes good luck, prosperity, and blessings for the newlyweds as they begin their life together. The red color of the envelope represents happiness, success, and warding off evil spirits. Key Aspects: Amount Matters The amount of money given should be an auspicious number, usually ending in 8 (which sounds like "wealth" in Chinese) or 9 (symbolizing longevity). Avoid amounts with the number 4, as it sounds like "death" in Chinese. Presentation & Etiquette Use a new, clean red envelope with gold or red designs, often featuring double happiness (囍) characters. Crisp, new bills are preferred over old or wrinkled money. The hóngbāo will be handed directly to the couple or use the Honeyfund registry to digitally send the hóngbāo to the newlyweds. Guests should write their names on the back of the envelope so the couple can later express gratitude.
