For our special day we wanted to bring you all in on our favorite activity, TRAVEL! Though we met and fell in love in Santa Monica, our relationship grew into something so much more during our many trips, and one of the more significant was our trip to Mexico City and Punta Mita. As a couple we have fallen in love with exploring the vast country of Mexico, with all its differing cultures, rich history and of course its variety of cuisines. Ask anyone from Mexico and they will tell you the best food in the country is in Oaxaca, so of course that's where we needed to be. This city caters to many of the things we love, good people, walkability, beautiful scenery, Mezcal, delicious food, and even Matcha! We can't wait to see you there and for you to experience it yourselves! FYI - if you have been having trouble with pronunciation, you're not alone: Wah-Ha-Cah.
Definitely! Please ensure your passport is active and doesn't expire within 6 months of when you're traveling. We also highly recommend Global Entry for your journey back, its worth it!
The national currency is Mexican pesos (MXN). Many establishments take credit cards (mostly Visa, and occasionally Amex). Pro tip, if you are provided the option to pay in USD vs MXN, choose MXN for a better exchange rate. Street vendors and taxis will either require the use of MXN pesos or is very much preferred. We recommend ordering ahead, through your bank to get the best exchange rate. There is a currency exchange in the OAX airport but the rate will be less favorable. There are also ATMs and currency exchanges throughout the city, with much better rates than the airport. Many smaller denominations are in coins, you may want to have a little pouch to put these in.
Transportation can be coordinated ahead of time with your hotel or a private service, however, taxis are readily available at the airport and throughout the city. While you cannot order an Uber from the airport to the city, Ubers are available in the city, and can be used for transportation to the airport when you depart. The city is very walkable. The streets can be a little uneven do to the cobblestones, and are mainly flat or have an incline depending on which direction you are going. If you'd rather give your feet the break, the city has plenty of taxis driving around, just flag one down! We highly recommend you carry smaller pesos for taxis as many prefer cash over using your credit card.
Absolutely! You know the bride always has a "List" going. Check out the "Things To Do" page for more info. If you decide to fly in a few days early, check out the "Schedule" page for where the bride and groom will be.
Extremely! We understand traveling to a new place can be nerve-wracking. The state of Oaxaca is considered one of the safest states in Mexico, and in our experience, we couldn't agree more. The locals are extremely friendly, most speak at least some English and many speak it very well. Oaxaca has avoided the cartel turf wars that you hear about in other areas of the country. We spent a week exploring the city by ourselves and never felt unsafe. While crime is very rare, like any city including Europe and in the States, pickpocketing can happen. As a precaution, you can limit your valuables and keep them close to your person. We want you to be able to enjoy your visit, if you have any other questions or concerns, please reach out to us. About the water...it is not recommended to drink the tap water. It is safe to shower, but avoid swallowing water. You may want to consider using bottled water to brush your teeth as well, most hotels will provide a carafe in the bathroom for this purpose. Hotels, restaurants and cafes use purified water for drinking and ice, but you may want to ask for confirmation to put you at ease. Bottled water is available for purchase practically everywhere, stop into any cafe or pharmacy and they will have cold bottles for sale.
We love your little ones, but for our wedding day we’ve decided to make it an adults-only celebration, with the exception of our own. We hope this gives everyone the chance to relax and enjoy the evening with us. While we will not have a place for them at the wedding, if you do choose to bring them along in your travels, our wedding planner has wonderful contacts for baby-sitting services. We will be utilizing these services ourselves. Let us know if you would like us to connect you.
The ceremony and cocktail hour will be held outdoors in a grassy area. Days in Oaxaca during November are typically warm, expect temperatures in the high 70s/low 80s, however it does cool down in the evenings with temperatures in the low 50s. The reception will be held in a mostly indoor atrium with areas open to the outdoors.
We kindly request that guests do not take photos during the ceremony. We have professional photographers to capture all the special moments so you can take this time to unplug and enjoy! Outside of the ceremony we would love to experience the festivities from your point of view. We will have a shared album for guests to share the memories!
It's not off the table! The reception area is reserved for us until midnight, if we feel like keeping the party going there are some really great bars just blocks away, we'll keep you posted.
