In 1944, Bedford's population was somewhere around 3,200 people. The D-Day Memorial was placed in this location as proportionally, Bedford, Virginia suffered the nation's severest D-Day losses. Now, the memorial serves as an emblem and is a recognition for those who suffered and lost those throughout the fight on the horrendous D-Day, June 6th, 1944.
