Celebrate Love in France (Un Amour à la Française)

On June 18, 2024, we spontaneously eloped in the most intimate way possible, right in our living room in Winston-Salem. What made the day even more special was that it also happened to be the birthday of our dear friend, Phyllis Dunning. With our friend and minister, Lynn Rhoades, guiding the ceremony, we exchanged vows in a space that already held so much love and meaning. Lynn’s presence was especially fitting because she was one of the very first people Jonathan met during our very first weekend together at the Cobblestone Farmers Market in January 2023. That meeting included a memorable moment when she dropped a dozen eggs on the asphalt, which were later transformed into a delicious pound cake. It felt like the perfect metaphor for life, to embrace the unexpected and always eat cake. Phyllis added her own touch of magic by reading Christopher Marlowe’s poem “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love,” reminding us to “come with me and be my love.” Katie’s parents, Chip and Terry, her sister Rachel, and our dear friend Joyce Storey from New York were also there to witness the day. We had originally planned to celebrate in 2025, but instead we chose to grow our family first. Now, two years later with a little one in tow, we cannot wait to gather in France with you to finally celebrate our marriage in our home away from home. -- Le 18 juin 2024, nous nous sommes unis de la manière la plus intime et spontanée qui soit : dans notre salon à Winston-Salem. Cette journée a été rendue encore plus spéciale car elle coïncidait avec l'anniversaire de notre chère amie, Phyllis Dunning. Notre amie et pasteur, Lynn Rhoades, a guidé la cérémonie, nous permettant d'échanger nos vœux dans un espace déjà riche de sens et d'amour. La présence de Lynn était particulièrement appropriée, car elle fut l'une des toutes premières personnes que Jonathan a rencontrées lors de notre tout premier week-end ensemble, en janvier 2023, au marché. Nous avions initialement prévu de célébrer notre union en 2025, mais nous avons choisi de fonder notre famille d'abord. Aujourd'hui, deux ans plus tard et avec un petit garçon en bas âge, nous sommes impatients de nous réunir avec vous en France pour enfin célébrer notre mariage sur la terre natale de Jonathan! Puisqu'aucun de nos proches français n'était présent pour notre union civile, nous tenons absolument à faire une grande fête en France : le moment est enfin arrivé!
