This UNESCO World Heritage site highlights the historical significance of slavery and indenture that both shaped Mauritius. Cultural myth has it as a suggested refuge for runaway slaves. After the abolition of slavery on Feb 1st 1835, it is rumored that a police expedition was despatched to Le Morne to inform the runaway slaves that they were free. The arrival of the police at the base of the mountain was however misinterpreted by the slaves who ran to the summit and leapt to their demise rather than to be recaptured back into slavery. The illusion of an underwater waterfall can be seen from hiking up Le Morne mountain or by a helicopter tour.
