How We Met

Friends, Writers, Kindred Spirits

When Kendra first met Joel, he was dressed as a werewolf ~ wearing full makeup, costume teeth and claws, and a shaggy grey wig ~ having just come off-stage from a musical theatre performance. Few words passed between them as they crossed paths in the crowded foyer of the Edward Milne Community School after the closing night of Howl: The Musical, but they more than made up for it a couple months later at the birthday party of a mutual friend. When one of them off-handedly mentioned creative writing, the rest of the room slowly faded into the background as they fell into an animated, hours-long conversation, sharing details about their passion-projects. Shortly after that night, Joel started a creative-writing club with a small group of friends ~ Kendra included ~ and between the story-telling, poetry reading, and colaborative projects that they shared in over the next few years, the two became close friends. 3 years of cherished friendship later ~ after an ill-timed party, texting non-stop for a week straight, an unforgettable day at the fair, and a zombie-movie date ~ Joel and Kendra finally took their first step into a deeper relationship together.

Our Proposal Story

08.02.2020

After 8 wonderful years of growing, talking, travelling, and learning together, Joel decided that he was going to propose to Kendra on their yearly visit to the Saanichton Fair ~ the same annual event that had helped to bloom their love for each other. Before he could find a ring that spoke to him, the world went into lockdown. Dismayed at the reality of his plans being upended, it was his sister, Hannah, that pushed him to overcome, and helped him to ensure the proposal would go on. In substitution of their yearly Fair Date, Kendra organized ~ on Joel's helpful suggestion ~ a weekend getaway that would include a spa-day and formal dinner at a safe establishment by the sea. After a much-needed day of de-stressing and indulging, Joel took Kendra for a stroll in the garden where they found an unoccupied swing-seat overlooking a pond filled with lilies. As they sat and enjoyed the evening sea air, Joel handed Kendra a small rectangular box containing a rolled letter tied with a ribbon. The letter expressed how much he treasured their time together and the depth of his love for her. When Kendra had finished reading, Joel told her that he had one more gift for her. Then he knelt, withdrew the ring, and asked her if she would stay with him for the rest of their days.
