Great for animal lovers, kids, and kids-at-heart; one of Jessica's favorite local spots since her first visit to Spearfish. Grab a bag of fish food from the gift shop, toss a handful into the pond, and watch countless fish (and birds) go into a frenzy.
One of the most stunning drives in the USA, full of natural beauty and wildlife. Cruise down the road, hike a nearby trail to Spearfish Falls, or hit Spearfish Canyon Lodge to rent ATVs or fishing equipment. Jessica saw her first mountain goats here :)
"The Vegas of South Dakota" (according to Lucas) and a tribute to the wild west. Formerly a popular mining town during the gold rush era, Deadwood now holds not only museums and historic buildings but also a festive strip of casinos, bars, and restaurants. One of the "Great 8" iconic landmarks of SD.
Great for kids but also definitely cool for adults. A zoo of reptiles and other fascinating creatures including exotic birds, prairie dogs, and a 120-year-old giant tortoise named Orville (one of Jessica's good friends). About an hour's drive from Spearfish, right by Bear Country.
If you have your car, you'll want to check out this one: a massive drive-thru (and partially walk-thru) zoo with all kinds of animals including bobcats, bison, and of course, bears. Most of the animals are rescues, and while the larger species are divided via fences, they are otherwise free to roam open spaces. About an hour's drive from Spearfish, right by Reptile Gardens.
