President Calvin Coolidge was born and raised in Plymouth Notch, VT, just 15 miles away from Woodstock. He moved from rural Vermont to attend college and much of his life was spent in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C., but he would often come home to visit his father and help out on the farm. Such was the case when President Warren G. Harding fell ill and died on a trip to San Francisco. His taking of the oath of office was a dramatic and funny story that all took place in the village of Plymouth Notch. Tours of the homestead are not available in the winter, but the town is always open to explore. President Coolidge is buried nearby and the cemetery is open to the public. It's worth the short drive to see either or both.
This might seem weird to recommend a gas station, but this gas station is something else. It's built in an old car dealership from the 1930's and it has a really good store. It's a great place to pop in if you need something.
