Talk about an illuminating experience. Here you take off at sunset, kayaking down a bay lined with mango groves and lit by moonlight. Well, that's until you reach the center, where the water will glow to the touch. Puerto Rico is home to 2 of the 3 known bioluminescent bays accessible to man. It is truly unlikely you've ever experienced anything like this. Please be forewarned the experience and intensity varies seasonally with the temperament of the biome. This is also a trip we recommend reserving a few days in advance.
This historic castle, is the sight of all good "Puerto Rico" selfies. If you're interested in the traditional Puerto Rican travel guide experience, this is definitely on your list as it is home of the Puerta de Aguas - the door to San Juan and the riches of Puerto Rico. It'll also put you next to the bright doors of Old San Juan --another great selfie moment.
We highly recommend stopping by any chinchorros, our roadside open aired restaurants, because they serve up the tastiest fritters in true Puerto Rican spirit. Each shack is packed filled with amazing cuisine; somethings to ask for are alcapurrias, pastilles, pastelitos, and bacalalitos. But if your looking for something more chic. Lote 23 has got it! Its the fusion spin on Puerto Rican street food. You won't be stuck to one choice to pick from because its a food truck village filled with food, smoothie,s desserts, and coffee options. A tasty treat, we always make sure to stop by while in San Juan.
The Cloud Forest, Jharen's first excursion in Puerto Rico, is the only rainforest in all of the Caribbean. It got its name because once you hike (or drive) up it you'll literally be looking over the clouds. As it is a rainforest, you may experience light on and off misting during your visit. If you bring your swimsuit or easy drying athletic clothes, you can take a dip in one of the 3 cool-refreshing waterfalls. And best of all, as a national park, it is free entry and free parking... Please note the trail can be quite slippery, act and dress accordingly.
This is our local Paradise. After a short 15 minute drive, you can spend the day kayaking, biking, or bird watching. The reserve is filled with lazy lagoons as well as all of our treasured Puerto Rican creatures. Here would be an ideal place to become enchanted by our beloved singing frog, the coqui.
While walking the streets of Viejo San Juan, you'll pass many mouth watering places. However, you'll only find one Barrachina. Why is that you ask? It's home and inventor to the original Pina Colada! Need I say more..
Jedidah can be a bit of a thrill seeker. With that being said, We'd recommend this excursion to our more adventurous guest planning to stay a while. It is a days drive into the mountains, but there are many tourist shuttles that will do so... Nonetheless, Toro Verde is the second longest and the highest zipline in the world. It is a flying sensation through the mountains of Puerto Rico, a view most do not realize exist. You will glide over canyons lined by rivers, it is truly a once in your lifetime experience.
If you experience rainy weather here on the island or just want to buy some time out of the heat than we recommend hitting up Plaza Las Americas. It is the biggest mall in the entire Caribbean, you can find anything there! As their slogan goes "el centro de todo" They are the center of everything!
