They met aboard a polar expedition vessel, the Akademik Sergey Vavilov. Solan was one of the first people Jaymie met on the first day of her first trip to Antarctica. When they laid eyes on each other, Jaymie thought to herself, damn, he's cute! Meanwhile, Solan completely lost track of space and time. He fell into the blue marble of her eyes and was lucky to have remembered his own name. They initially connected over a love for music and adventure. During one of their first conversations, as they shared dreams and family histories, Solan was wearing a turquoise speedo the entire time, and that's when Jaymie knew he was the one.

On a casual afternoon, during an expedition in the remote South Orkney Islands, Antarctica, exactly 8 years after they first met, Solan asked Jaymie to accompany him on a small boat to scout for new landing sites. Jaymie thought the first two landing sites did not seem safe for passengers and she could not understand why Solan insisted on attempting to land. When they finally were able to land at a third site (also not safe for passengers), Solan asked Jaymie to close her eyes. When she opened them, Solan was standing there with a ring and a bottle of champagne, proposing to her among the penguins and wild weather.
