Travel

The Wedding Website of Jasmine Hill and Andrew Burrell
Islay is a little island off the west coast of Scotland. It truly is beautiful and wonderfully peaceful, in large part because of how remote it is. It is quite a journey to get there, so travel is something worth seriously considering before sending your RSVP. Organising a wedding in our favourite place is a bit of a challenge, which is why we’re asking for responses early to help with planning. There are really only three main ways to travel to Islay, and we’ve outlined each option below to help you decide what works best. We’ve been loads of times ourselves, so if you’ve got any questions or want a bit of advice, just pop us a message. We completely understand that the distance and travel logistics won’t work for everyone, and please know we won’t be offended at all if you’re unable to make it, we know it’s a long way to come!

Travel Note

Drive & Ferry

Dependent on where you are, this is the easiest option, as you would then have your car with you on the island. The ferry leaves from Kennacraig Ferry Terminal and goes into one of two ports on the island: Port Askaig or Port Ellen. Tickets for the ferry are released in December, and we can assist you with booking these if needed. The drive from Glasgow to Kennacraig is absolutely beautiful and is part of the trip! In the summer, there are usually between three and five sailings a day, and they get booked up quickly, as this is the only way on and off the island (apart from flying). Sailings are also subject to cancellation due to adverse weather, so we would advise trying to arrive at least the day before the wedding.

Travel Note

Glasgow, Car Hire & Ferry

Glasgow is the nearest major city and offers a range of travel options. Depending on where you’re coming from, you can fly into Glasgow Airport or take a train into the city. From there, you can hire a car and enjoy the scenic drive to Kennacraig, where the ferry will take you across to Islay. This journey - by air, rail, and road - offers flexibility and the chance to take in some beautiful Scottish landscapes along the way, making your trip part of the adventure! As above, there are usually between three and five sailings a day, and they get booked up quickly, as this is the only way on and off the island (apart from flying). Sailings are also subject to cancellation due to adverse weather, so we would advise trying to arrive at least the day before the wedding.

Fly & Car Hire

Another option for reaching Islay is to fly from Glasgow Airport directly to Islay Airport. You can get to Glasgow by car, plane or train, depending on what works best for you. Once you arrive on Islay, hiring a car is essential for getting around the island and exploring its beautiful surroundings. This option is more expensive, but it can be a convenient choice if you’re traveling from farther away, as some of our friends and family will be!
