This is where Jamie and Eric had their second date over New Year's Eve before heading to a friend's house. It offers excellent craft beer and TV’s if you are looking for a quick place to sit down. They have a limited bar menu, especially on Wednesdays when they have a local food truck. This is Jamie’s favorite brewery in Spearfish. Eric’s Favorites: Half a Horse (IPA) and Yellow Jacket (IPA) Jamie’s Favorites: Bobcat Logic and Lemon Bar
This is where Jamie and Eric met for the first time outside of school. They serve great pizza and salads and have a great comprehensive drink list. Eric’s favorites: Any of the IPA’s, especially the Ninja Juice. Jamie’s favorite: Strawberry Whip or any of the fruited sours
If you are looking for a sit-down dinner right in Spearfish, there is no place better than Steerfish Steakhouse behind Mainstreet. They have great options for everything South Dakota beef has to offer.
Just across the border in Wyoming, this is Eric’s favorite steakhouse. They have great bread, better steak cuts and the best old-fashioned Eric has found since he has been out west.
Blackbird has excellent bulletproof coffees, a wide selection of teas, and a limited food/sweets menu in an intimate setting.
Green Bean has a wide selection of coffee/tea drinks with more of a breakfast/brunch/lunch vibe.
This is a family-owned establishment right around the corner from Spearfish Brewing. They have excellent sweet treats and a simple drink menu.
One of Jamie’s favorite attractions in Spearfish for people to visit. Inside Spearfish City Park, is close to the Spearfish campground and has multiple access points to walking paths. Not to mention entry into the Hatchery is FREE.
Deadwood South Dakota was founded before Spearfish but just by a few years. The HBO series is based on this town. Also, where Wild Bill Hickock was killed while playing poker. Famous for those who came west in an attempt to strike it rich by panning and mining for gold. There is a ton to do in Deadwood including gambling, live music, a brewery or two, and plenty of other attractions. At the very least it is worth a drive through the Black Hills National Forest for the sites and a walk-through of Deadwood to say you were there!
Lookout Mountain: is located to the East overlooking Spearfish proper, as the name suggests. There is a total hike-able 6-7 miles but the summit can be done in under two miles from either parking or trail head location - How to get there: Take I-90 Exit 12 in Spearfish - Take Jackson Blvd to the west - Turn right on N 10th St Turn Right again on E Nevada St. Park here where there is a through tunnel under the highway to the trail
Crow Peak Mountain: this is a personal favorite of both Jamie and Eric. This is the hike they did the day before they got engaged, where Jamie was sure Eric was going to ask her. It is a 15–20-minute drive to the trail head in a part of the Black Hills National Forest. This hike is just below 7 miles round trip, with around 3500 feet of climbing. Bring water and a snack for the top and put side 3-4 hours if you plan to make the summit. - From Spearfish, take Hillsview road west. From Hillsview Rd. Take a left on Higgins Gulch road (Forest Service road 214), and follow that to the trailhead about 7 miles. This road is gravel and IS passable by car so no worries if you have a rental.
Roughlock Falls: This is an easy few-mile hike with fantastic views of the river and canyon on both sides as you walk the trail to Roughlock falls. This is where Jamie and Eric did their engagement pictures. If you choose this hike, you are able to drive to the parking area that will take you almost the entire way to the falls but we highly recommend this easier hike that shows off the canyon. - - From Spearfish take Spearfish Canyon Rd. (HWY 14A) 13.2 miles to the Spearfish Canyon Lodge. Park at the lodge, cross the highway, and head down the road towards Roughlock Falls and the sign will be on the right. (This is the same parking as the 76 Trail hike and across the road from Spearfish Falls Hike)
