Jakob and Haley met shortly after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic on a dating app called The League. They spent several weeks messaging back and forth and immediately felt the chemistry between them. They both knew that this was something special, bonding over their shared hatred of tomatoes, growing up only children, identical Myers-Briggs personality types (INFJ), and their love of the TV show “Dexter.” After a few weeks of FaceTime dates, they decided to meet face-to-face for the first time on April 27th, 2020 at Jakob’s house. Haley even met Jakob’s parents on that first date, and they liked her right away! Because of the lockdown, Jakob and Haley didn’t have their first “true” date in public until three months into their relationship, when some shops and restaurants finally started to open back up again. After a truly unconventional start to their relationship, Haley and Jakob have thrived together amidst a pandemic, job furloughs, working from home, multiple moves, job changes, and adapting to a new normal. All of this has only made their bond even stronger and able to last for the long haul.

Jakob began planning the proposal 6 months in advance. He started researching rings, taking notes about the styles Haley liked. He knew that if he planned any special date, trip, or surprise, Haley would suspect something. So he waited for Haley to plan a trip later in the year for her birthday. Once the trip was decided to visit Haley’s college friend Alyssa and her husband Matt in Annapolis, MD, Jakob set the plans in motion. He messaged Alyssa separately and they worked together to coordinate all of the details. They found a perfect proposal spot at the US Naval Academy on the waterfront overlooking the Chesapeake bay. It was perfectly secluded and romantic. Jakob hired a photographer and made sure to coordinate a time to pop the question when the lighting would be just right. They kept it a secret from Haley by planning a formal dinner at a nice Italian restaurant later that evening, so everyone had an excuse to dress up. Haley was under the ruse that they were headed to a scenic spot just to take some photos before dinner. She was completely taken by surprise when Jakob got down on one knee and asked her to spend forever with him! It was the easiest yes of her life.
