Question

Do I need a passport?

Answer

Yes! Make sure your passport will not expire at least 6 months before the big weekend! :)

Question

Is San Miguel de Allende safe?

Answer

Yes! We've been here many times and not once, even for a moment, have we ever felt unsafe! Locals, including the ex-pat Americans who live there permanently, are very friendly and welcoming to tourists. But of course in any situation, we would ask that you use common sense as always when you are traveling, whether in the US or internationally.

Question

Can I bring my kids?

Answer

To allow all guests the ability to relax and really let loose, we have chosen to make our special weekend adults only. We hope you will understand our decision and take the opportunity to let your hair down, kick up your heels and celebrate in style!

Question

What will the weather be like?

Answer

San Miguel in September is beautiful! The average temperature during this time ranges from 75-88 degrees during the day. Sometimes there is potential for rain, but if so, it will only last a few minutes. Overall the temperatures will be warm, but we always suggest packing a light jacket too just in case - evenings will cool down into the high 50s.

Question

How long should we stay?

Answer

We know that time away from home and work is precious so we recommend making the most of your trip and staying as long as you can! With that being said, given San Miguel is so small, you can see most of the town in 3 days. Have extra time? Mexico City (our favorite big city on earth) is just a few hours drive away and gorgeous beaches are a short flight away. Looking for other Mexico recommendations? Let us know!

Question

What shoes should I wear? (IMPORTANT!)

Answer

Walking around San Miguel is a joy. But please pack comfortable, sturdy shoes (Especially for the callejonada on Friday!) The cobblestones are incredible, but walking on them in a stiletto or thin heeled pump is near impossible. For ladies: a sandal, a thick block heel, etc. is likely your best bet.

Question

Can I drink the tap water in San Miguel de Allende?

Answer

Sadly, NO. Stick to bottled water across the board to be safe. We even brush our teeth with bottled water while in Mexico - better to be safe than sorry. A note on ice: Yes, the ice is safe. San Miguel is chock full of visitors, so any hotel or restaurant you visit will be using ice made from purified water. We have drinks with ice in them constantly in SMA and it's never been a problem.

Question

Should I rent a car?

Answer

Our recommendation is to AVOID renting a car. San Miguel is a relatively small, dense town with narrow cobblestone streets and parking is extremely hard to come by. There are also cabs are everywhere and they are both safe and very cheap! If you take a cab while in the city, make sure you use a green or white one (these are official). Also make sure to agree on a rate to your destination before accepting the ride. Don't forget though! You will need to book a car to take you from the airport to San Miguel and back. That's the only important ride to be aware of during your time here.

Question

Should I just drive from Mexico City?

Answer

Driving from Mexico City is very tempting - but unless you are staying there on one (or either) end of the trip, it's not your most efficient option. The drive from the Mexico City Airport to San Miguel de Allende is usually around 4 hours, and one-way usually costs around $350 + tip. There are great safe, clean, and comfortable direct busses with direct routes as well! We have done this drive before. It's a comfortable, direct road - but if you are trying to time optimize, we recommend flying into Leon or QRO.

Question

What's up with WhatsApp?

Answer

If you don't have it already, we HIGHLY recommend downloading WhatsApp on your phone. It is an international messaging app (similar to texting). All of the car companies, hotels and airbnbs will use this app to communicate with you about your upcoming stay and travel plans. It's extremely helpful and straightforward to use! Start to familiarize yourself with it now if it's new to you!
