We recommend our guests fly into Dublin (DUB) Airport. Our wedding is on a Tuesday, so we encourage guests to travel to Ireland over the weekend, arriving to Dublin by Sunday, May 10 at the LATEST if you plan to take our arranged coach bus to Cloughjordan on Monday midday. If you would like to partake in some pub hopping on Sunday in Dublin, both Maggie and Jack plan to have their bachelorette/bachelor festivities that Sunday, all are welcome to the pub hopping festivities! Check out our "Dublin Recommendations" page for our favorite pubs and activities in Dublin.

Question

Tips and Tricks for those traveling to Ireland for the first time *Part 1*

Answer

Getting To/From Dublin Airport To get to/from the airport, there are multiple options. The simplest, but most expensive is a cab, which can be found at the taxi rank outside the terminal. Another option are the coach busses that depart outside Terminal 2 (where international flights land). These coach busses follow a circular route from Dublin city center to the airport and back. There are multiple companies that do this, but the two most popular are called AirCoach and Dublin Express. Tickets can be purchased from vendors near where the busses pick you up. Please ensure you know which stop or neighborhood is closest to your hotel when you go to purchase tickets. Additionally, if you have large rolling luggage, the ancient cobblestone streets and sidewalks of Dublin are not extremely welcoming this, so please factor this into your decision. "Uber" does exist within Ireland, but only calls you a cab or a black car driver. Cabs can be hailed within Dublin using the FREENOW app. Transit Within Dublin Within Dublin, there is bus service, tram service (called Luas), and a metro rail that runs along the coast (called DART). The public transit system is generally good, and we would recommend using it when possible. To access public transit, you can purchase a LEAP card, which can be purchased for about 5 Euros at convenience stores around the city. You can also purchase tickets to use the DART within the stations or pay, using coins, with the driver when entering the bus.

Tips and Tricks for those traveling to Ireland for the first time *Part 2*

Answer

Power Converters Ireland uses a Type G outlet, so you will need an adapter to plug in any electronics. Ireland and the UK use the same outlet, however, various European countries use different outlets. If you are traveling to other countries before/after Ireland, please check beforehand which adaptor you will need. There are multiple adaptors available that support all or most european countries. Additionally, appliances like hair dryers tend to pull more power than European outlets (and cheap adaptors) can handle. If you need one of these devices, please consider checking if your hotel has one in advance. Cloughjordan will provide hairdryers for guest use. Transit To Cloughjordan To arrive to/from Cloughjordan house, we have arranged a private coach bus to pick up everyone in Dublin on Monday, then return on Wednesday. Unless you own a car or plan on renting to continue your trip around Ireland after the wedding, taking the bus is highly recommended. There are extremely limited public transit options to get to Cloughjordan and back. Money The currency in the Republic of Ireland is Euros. Dublin is a very digital city and cash is used less often in Dublin than it is in Chicago. However, it is always a good idea to carry some cash. There is a high likelihood that you will not need to use cash a single time on your trip. Tipping Tipping is not required, nor customary in Ireland. You should not tip on most service related purchases (coffee, drinks, dinner, etc.), unless the service was exemplary. Additionally, tax (which they call VAT) is included within the listed cost of an item.

Answer

Passport You will need a valid passport to enter Ireland, make sure to check that your passport has not expired! Visas Americans do not need to pre-apply for a visa to visit the Republic of Ireland or Continental Europe (i.e. the Schengen Zone). If you have an alternative passport, please check whether you need a tourist visa to enter the Republic of Ireland prior to your arrival. If you plan to extend your trip and visit the United Kingdom (including Belfast), Americans do technically need a Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Visa from the UK prior to arrival. It costs £16 and more info can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/eta. Cell Phone Service If you would like to have cell phone service within the Republic of Ireland, you have three choices: 1. Your current cell phone plan may have international coverage, either included or for an additional fee (usually daily). 2. You may download an eSim, which can be done prior to departure via a multitude of apps. We use Airalo and have for years. Please ensure your roaming is on when you land and be careful not to delete your current cell phone eSim. This is the route we would recommend. 3. In Dublin, you can walk into an Eir, Vodaphone, or 3 store and purchase a new sim card and 1 month of service (no contract). They will usually help you change your sim card directly in the store. Please do not lose your current sim card, as you will need to switch it back once you return to the USA.
