Enjoy this lush botanical garden and learn a thing or two about St Lucia’s gorgeous vegetation.
Anse Chastanet is a long, wide beach that's presided over by a resort of the same name and shared with Jade Mountain (the most exclusive resort on the island). Because of the pristine reef that lies within swimming distance, Anse Chastanet offers some of St. Lucia's best snorkeling and Scuba Diving. The car ride to this beach could be seen as somewhat traumatizing, so we recommend a water taxi from Sugar Beach if you can’t stomach 4-wheel drive off-roading types of adventure. If a little off-roading doesn’t concern you - we highly recommend scuba diving out of this location. But make sure you are taking a 4 wheel drive vehicle!
Daily 9 am- 5 pm. Gorgeous waterfall set in a tropical garden. You can sit in the pool beneath the cascade or on benches. We suggest a hike of the upper trail behind the wall where hummingbirds, ginger lilies and a stunning view of Petit Piton vie for attention. Go early or late to avoid crowds.
While more manageable than Petit Piton, hiking Gros Piton, which rises to 798m is still a challenge. It's a long and hot ascent (bring sunscreen, plenty of water and something to eat) and you'll need to start out in the cool of early morning to ensure that you'll get back down before nightfall. Because the path branches off in several directions, a guide is necessary. Depending on your level of fitness, the hike will take two to four hours round-trip. It starts out low and level along a rudimentary path and gently ascends until about 300m from the peak. After that - it's a steep rocky climb.
Along the waterfront, you can catch convenient water taxis that traverse the area of Soufriere and around: boats service all the nearby bays, many of which are difficult to access from the land without your own car. Try Moby Dick Water Taxi. Cost per person range between US$10-$30 depending on where you take them. This is the best way to access Marigot Bay from the Soufriere area.
The Sulfur Springs are a popular destination in St Lucia. Up until the mid-1990s, tourists were able to walk right up to the end of the tar-colored pits. Following an accident where a local tour guide named Gabriel fell through the crust into a pit and received second degree burns from just above his waist, the formation of what is now known as Gabriel's Hole has restricted viewing to a platform a few hundred feet away. A couple of hundred yards downstream from the springs, the water temperature is still hot (around 110 Fahrenheit or 45 Celsius), but cool enough for tourists to enter and give themselves a mud bath. These mud baths are believed by some to contain medicinal powers, including soothing mosquito bites. So if you forget to use your bug spray one day - consider heading for a mud bath. Best time to visit is early morning or evening when temperature outside has cooled off.
Ranked the number 1 activity in St Lucia, this island boasts Beaches, Parks and Gardens, and Sightseeing, Pigeon Island can appeal to an eclectic mix of travelers. You could get a history lesson about the park's previous occupants (including a pirate with a wooden leg) or learn more about the formation of the man-made causeway that currently connects the island to the mainland. You could also explore 18th century military ruins, including Fort Rodney, which affords panoramic views of the ocean and Rodney Bay. There are also some beaches and a few restaurants situated around the 44-acre national park. Other Travelers recommend going early in the morning as the fewer visitors makes it feel like you have the whole island to themselves. You can visit the Pigeon Island National Park every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entrance costs approximately $7 USD for adults and about $1 USD for children ages 5 to 12. Visit their website for further details.
The Tet Paul Nature Trail hike can take about 45 minutes to complete. The hike itself is of easy to moderate difficulty and is great for families and groups. There will be many stunning photo opportunities so don’t forget to bring along a camera! There’s something for everyone on the Tet Paul hike! Culture, history, exotic horticulture and spectacular landscapes can all be found here. The views from the Tet Paul Scenic Trail have been described as absolutely heavenly. From the majestic Pitons to the far away islands of Martinique and St. Vincent, you can see it all from points along the trail. The gorgeous southern side of St. Lucia including Jalousie Bay is easily visible along the way.
Saint Lucia is a paradise for divers. The island forms the tip of an underwater volcano where both beginner and experienced divers can rejoice in a stunning variety of coral, sponges and sea fauna. There are too many dive sites to list. However, we recommend the dive shop at Anse Chastanet Beach because it is only one of two dive shops on the island that offers Nitrox!
Foodie alert: Orlando’s mission is to bring Caribbean cuisine to the world and to bring it the same recognition that French, Asian and Chinese already have globally. My aim is to do this by involving the local community, by collaborating with local farmers and fishermen, using only local produce and promoting the health benefits of fresh local ingredientS.
