How we met

Becca and Isaiah's story began in high school, though it took years for the timing to catch up with the connection they had already found. Though Becca had seen Isaiah on campus before, they officially met on the first day of their senior year in August 2011, in sixth-period law class—the last class of the day. Isaiah didn't waste much time. By the first Friday of school, he had asked Becca out. She said no, but the two remained close friends. In 2015, Isaiah asked Becca out again. She agreed, but before the date could happen, life intervened. Isaiah moved to Los Angeles, and Becca moved to Portland. Instead of dating, they stayed connected through countless phone calls that often stretched for hours. Isaiah even sent Becca a mixtape whose carefully chosen songs made it clear how he felt about her. But neither of them was looking to start a long-distance relationship, and once again, the timing wasn't right. In the summer of 2018, Becca moved back to the Bay Area, where Isaiah had already returned to. After she wished Isaiah a happy birthday, the two started chatting again, and made plans to meet up on August 14. Fresh from onboarding for her new special education job, Becca drove to Sausalito wearing very "teacher-like" clothing, fully convinced she was meeting an old friend to simply catch up. Isaiah, meanwhile, knew he was taking her on a date. The two spent the day walking around Sausalito, talking as easily as they always had, and sharing a meal by the water. At one point, a seagull swooped in and stole one of Becca's shishito peppers. It was memorable for all the right reasons—and a few unexpected ones. Later that day, while driving around town, Isaiah finally decided to stop waiting for the perfect moment. After years of friendship, long phone calls, and missed opportunities, he told Becca what she had known all along: how he felt about her. Then he asked the question he had been trying to ask for years. Her answer? "**** it. Why not?" As it turns out, seven years of friendship made for an excellent first date. Looking back, both of them are grateful things happened when they did. They had growing up to do, lives to build, and lessons to learn before finding each other at the right time. What started as a friendship between two teenagers grew into a partnership built on trust, laughter, unwavering support, and years of conversation. Their relationship is proof that sometimes the best love stories aren't the ones that happen quickly—they're the ones that take their time.
