September is one of the most beautiful months in Tahoe. The weather is generally very nice. Please remember this is a mountain town with an elevation of 6,200 ft. Nights can be cool and dry and days can often be sunny, warm and beautiful. Pack layers. Average temperatures range: 60s-70s during the day and 40s-50s at night. The weather can change quickly so be sure to check the 10-day forecast before you leave for this destination.
If you are flying into the Reno Airport, there are 2 ways to get to the lake. Highway 80 is generally the quickest route, you should plan for approximately 1 hour (without traffic). Mount Rose Highway is another option which is absolutely beautiful, but more of a mountain road with many switchbacks. You should plan approximately 75 minutes for this route. If you take this route, just as you get past the summit and the road starts heading back downhill, there is a pullout on the left side of the road with a spectacular vista point. Be sure to stop and take in your first views of Lake Tahoe!
The short answer is no, but it is highly recommended. Please see the Travel section for more information about shuttle and taxi services - but having your own car will allow you much more freedom to explore Tahoe and get to and from the airport on your own schedule.
The wedding is located in Homewood, CA which is about 15 minutes south of Tahoe City, CA along the West Lake Boulevard. If proximity to the wedding is your top priority - staying in Homewood, CA or Sunnyside would be the closest areas. If you want to be near restaurants, bars and a grocery store - Tahoe City, CA would be recommended. For those looking for a higher end resort accommodation, The Resort at Squaw Creek in Olympic Valley, CA would be my top recommendation. If you are looking at a map - you ideally want to be along the north and west shoreline of the lake, between Dollar Hill and Homewood. If you are looking at staying up highway 89, I would recommend not staying any further north than Olympic Valley, CA.
Truckee, CA; Kings Beach, CA; Incline Village, NV and Stateline, CA are all additional towns in North Lake Tahoe, BUT these will all be at least a 30-40 minute (or more with traffic) drive to the rehearsal dinner and wedding venue. South Lake Tahoe, CA and Stateline, NV are over an hour away. If you do end up staying in any of these areas, be sure to plan extra time for travel because there is only one road to get around the lake and all it takes is one backup or road construction (very common) to hit quite a delay.
