The Wedding Website of Sarah Hjelsand and Ryan Marlega
The venue that fit most of our needs is San Galgano Abbey, the roofless ruins of a gothic church located near Siena, Italy. The reception will be held at Casale San Galgano, a restored Tuscan farmhouse on the grounds of the Abbey (seen above - the reception/accommodations are a short walk from the Abbey). If you choose to accompany us at our celebration, we ask that you have a mind open to adventure, as our venue is off the beaten path when it comes to places to easily travel to in Italy if you are planning to use public transport/car services. The closest cities with large airports, rail systems, and car rentals are Florence, Pisa, and Rome. From these locations, getting to San Galgano Abbey can be done many different ways, depending on how much you want to see along the journey. The closest local airport is still a 1-2 hour bus ride from the venue. I have some travel options listed here, but will be updating this section as we learn more with our planner!

Shuttle

Shuttle from Florence to the Venue - Departing from Piazza De Frescobaldi

June 15, 2026 1:15 pm - 3:00 pm

We are planning to book a shuttle for guests from Florence Airport directly to the venue. Please RSVP if you plan on using the shuttle, so we can book the correct size :-). You could fly into Rome, take the train to Florence, and catch the shuttle to get to the venue the day before the wedding if you choose this option (flying directly into Florence is more expensive than Rome). Ubers, taxis, and parking are limited, but there is a local bus stop near the venue. Accommodations at the venue are included for convenience. A return shuttle to Florence is planned for June 17th.

Travel Note

Getting there, and getting back

The venue does not have a train station nearby, only a bus stop. The closest train station is Siena, and from there you would take a bus. To get back to the Rome airport from the venue after the wedding, will take 5-6 hours depending on which route you take. By car it will still take 3 hours to drive directly. We will have a return shuttle from the venue back to Florence on 06/17/26, leaving at 11am and getting to Florence at 12:30pm. Please keep this in mind when booking flights for your return home! Parking at the venue is not guaranteed as the Abbey is open to the public except for the ceremony.

Flight

Flying into Rome (Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport)

Flying into Rome is generally cheaper than flying into Florence, although Florence is the closer larger airport to the venue (and you may fly to Rome as a layover flying to Florence.) If you fly into Rome, you can either take the high speed rail (around 2-3 hours), rent a car, or fly directly to Siena, the closest local airport. From Siena you can take the bus 1-2 hours to the venue. Please let me know if you are planning to stay in Siena, as we can have the shuttle pick up there as well.
