Pete and Helen separately moved to NYC on the same weekend in September 2013. Neither knew that they were only 2.5 years and countless awkward first dates away from finding one another . . . In May 2016, Pete messaged Helen on OkCupid. She responded (eventually), and they met for a drink at a bar in Brooklyn on Memorial Day. When Helen saw Pete for the first time, she felt something light up inside her, and saw his face light up, too. That first exciting spark grew through concerts and breweries, trips upstate, hikes up and down mountains, documentaries filmed, books edited, road trips to see family, and subway rides to find bits of New York history, to become a shared world of hard work, joy, and curiosity that neither of us can imagine living without.
After spending Christmas in Colorado, Helen visited Pete and his family in Cleveland. It was sunny and in the 50s, so Pete asked Helen if she wanted to go on a hike near the Shaker Lakes. The two hiked into Doan Brook Gorge, where Helen failed to pick up on numerous warning signs. They reached the bottom and came to the base of a waterfall, where Pete got down on one knee and asked "Do you want to get married?" Helen knew what to say: HELEN "Is this for real??" PETE "Mhm!" HELEN "Of course! Yes!" The two cracked open the Great Lakes Christmas Ales Pete had cleverly brought, found a fallen tree to sit on, and began to plan their future.
