If you're reading this, you are invited to enjoy the WHOLE trip with us! Please join us for welcome drinks and beach day activities leading up to the wedding! We recommend arriving a day early or extending your trip to enjoy all of the activities Puerto has to offer.
Puerto Escondido is located in Oaxaca in the southernmost region of mainland Mexico, so you will need to fly! Flying in and out of Puerto Escondido is pretty simple and there is no shortage of beautiful places to stay when you get there! For most people, we recommend flying into Mexico City and catching a short flight to Puerto Escondido. It is generally cheaper to book the flights as a round trip separately from where you live to Mexico City and then getting a round trip from Mexico City to Puerto Escondido. See our travel & lodging tab for more info!
Yes! You don't need to go buy rosetta stone, however it would help you to have a few basics under your belt such as how to order a taxi, or order basic food or drinks. It helps a lot to have a translater app downloaded on your phone.
At a minimum, you will of course need your passport, pesos, and an adventurous spirit! Puerto Escondido is a tropical beach town, so sunscreen and bug spray will make your stay much more comfortable. The temperature rarely dips below 80 so plan to dress comfortably. Occasionally, tropical rain showers make an appearance. If you plan on renting a scooter or surf boards, most businesses will ask for a form of ID as collateral so bring an ID in addition to your passport.
Yes, you will need to bring your passport and will need to pay the FMM fee only if you are staying in Mexico for more than 7 days. If your passport has expired or is about to expire, now would be the time to renew it! Renewal can sometimes take months. If all else fails, there is an emergency renewal option available for people who have submitted a renewal form and have not received their passport. This option is available if you have not received your passport within 72 hours of your departure date.
Ian's favorite way to get around is to rent a scooter! If you are comfortable with that there are many options to rent from and they cost from around $20-30 USD per day. There are also many taxis around the area and they are a safe and quick way to get around. Please note that most taxi drivers will only accept Pesos for payment, and you should always ask how much the trip will be when you get into the taxi as opposed to when you get out.
There is a lot to do in Puerto. Luckily we have been there many times and have some good recommendations! Look at Hannah and Ian's favorite things to do in the Things To Do tab for more info.
Puerto Escondido has grown a lot in the past few years and most places now take cards. Just make sure you tell your bank that you are traveling! As always, it is preferred to pay for small transactions in cash, and there are many ATM's in the Centro district of Puerto Escondido to take Pesos out.
Yes! We would not be bringing our favorite people on a vacation to a dangerous destination. Oaxaca's crime rates are consistently lower than the rest of Mexico, and Puerto Escondido is a very safe, sleepy beach town. With that being said, nowhere is perfect. Please use the same common sense you would use back home in the states on a night out and you will be fine!
