There's something enchanting about Chebeague Island. Back in 2019, amidst the buzzing kitchen of the Inn, our paths converged as line cooks. Little did I know that this idyllic island would hold more than just picturesque views. It would bring Ryan into my life. From the moment our eyes met, an undeniable spark ignited. We wasted no time and embarked on a summer adventure together, seizing every fleeting moment. At work, I assumed the role of mentor, sharing my culinary prowess with Ryan. Our shared love for food and the hospitality industry became the foundation of our camaraderie. Yet, an awareness lingered that the season's end loomed over us like a shadow. As the days waned, I faced the inevitable return to the bustling streets of New York, while Ryan's future remained uncertain. With this knowledge, we made a pact to embrace the present. We dove headfirst into every experience, united and resolute. Mornings found us on the beach, relishing the salty breeze before the day's toil. Even during scorching afternoons, we leaped from the wharf, surrendering to the refreshing embrace of the sea. As twilight cast its golden hues, campfires crackled, illuminating our laughter. In the depths of night, we embarked on whimsical 3 am bike rides, chasing adventure under a moonlit sky. Together, we marveled at constellations, bared our souls under the stars, and even dared to skinny-dip, embracing the freedom that love brings. Our journey took us to Bubba's Sulky Lounge, a haven for uninhibited revelry. Amidst the pulsating music, we surrendered to the rhythm, dancing as if the world would forever be our dance floor. We savored every moment, immersing ourselves in pure euphoria. Then, an epiphany unfolded before us. The end of summer need not mark the end of us.
After our first summer on Chebeague Island, Hannah and I decided to take on a new adventure together and make the move to New York City. We found ourselves in a small basement apartment, navigating the vibrant and fast-paced city life. While Hannah returned to work at Aquavit, I was fortunate enough to secure a job at Sunday in Brooklyn. It was a thrilling time as we dove headfirst into the culinary scene and embraced the opportunities that awaited us. We spent our days exploring the city, immersing ourselves in its diverse culture and vibrant food scene. The energy of New York was infectious, and we were determined to make the most of our time there. I honed my skills at Sunday in Brooklyn, soaking up the knowledge and expertise of the talented team. It was a period of growth and learning, both personally and professionally. However, as fate would have it, the pandemic hit, sending shockwaves through the city and the world. The bustling streets became eerily quiet, and the uncertainty loomed over us. In those challenging times, Hannah and I made the difficult decision to leave New York City. We packed our belongings, said our goodbyes, and returned to the comforting embrace of Chebeague Island.
On Chebeague, we found comfort in the timeless rituals of island life. We walked the shoreline, felt the sand between our toes, and admired breathtaking sunsets. Gathered around bonfires, we shared stories and laughter under the starlit sky. During those months, we cherished the simplicity of life, tending to gardens and indulging in meals made with local ingredients. Our connection to nature grew stronger, and the island's beauty reminded us of the resilience of community. As the summer came to a close, we carried the memories of our time on Chebeague with us. The island became a sanctuary, teaching us to appreciate the little things and face challenges with resilience. It held a special place in our hearts as we ventured back into the world, forever grateful for the respite it provided. And so, with the pandemic's impact still unfolding, we embarked on a new chapter, carrying the spirit of Chebeague's peace and connection within us.
After the summer of 2020, we relocated to Denver, where I had previously lived for around a decade and where my family now resides. Hannah took on the role of an overnight baker during the winter months, immersing herself in the world of croissants. We embraced the slower pace of life in Denver, surrounded by the stunning Rocky Mountains. Our time there allowed us to strengthen family bonds and create lasting memories. Denver became a significant chapter of growth and exploration as we continued our journey together.
In the summer of 2021, Ryan and I had the wonderful opportunity to take on new roles at the inn on Chebeague Island. I was entrusted with the responsibility of heading the kitchen, while Ryan took on the role of managing the dining room. It was an exciting venture that brought us great fulfillment. Beyond our roles, we were fortunate to meet and befriend a diverse group of individuals during that summer. The island's tight-knit community welcomed us with open arms, and we cherished the friendships we formed. It was a reminder of the importance of human connection and the beauty of shared experiences. Looking back on that summer, we felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the inn's success and be a part of the island's vibrant community. It was a humbling experience, and we were thankful for the support we received along the way. As the summer drew to a close, we reflected on the memories we had created and the lessons we had learned. It was not just about personal achievement, but about the joy of working together, building relationships, and creating an environment where people could come together and enjoy good food and company. The summer of 2021 holds a special place in our hearts as a time of growth, fulfillment, and the realization of our shared aspirations. It taught us the value of hard work, the importance of humility, and the rewards that come from embracing new opportunities. We carry the experiences and connections from that summer with gratitude and a deep appreciation for the journey we have embarked on. During that magical summer of 2021 on Chebeague Island, Ryan proposed to me at Deer Point, with our beloved cat Taco by our side. It was a moment of pure joy and love, sealing our commitment amidst the island's beauty.
Two years later, Hannah has risen to the position of Chef de Cuisine at Twelve in Portland, while Ryan has found his calling as the Food and Beverage Director at the Chebeague Island Inn, sister restaurant to Twelve. Their careers have flourished, and their dedication to their craft has been instrumental in their success. Despite the demands of their roles, their love for each other remains unwavering, and they continue to inspire and support each other on their shared journey. The future holds endless possibilities as they embrace their roles and look ahead to what lies beyond.
