Question

Why did Matt & Hannah choose Princeton to host their wedding?

Answer

Matt grew up about 20 minutes away and Princeton served as a regular gathering place for friends (and most importantly, to get ice cream during all four seasons). One of Hannah & Matt's first dates was to Princeton in October 2020. Hannah quickly fell in love with the autumn leaves, Lake Carnegie, and the charming town square. Since then, Hannah and Matt continue to take regular trips to Princeton for long walks and runs through the woods, date nights in town, and of course, ice cream!

Question

What is the history of the Morven Museum & Garden?

Answer

Morven was built in the 1750s by Richard Stockton, who signed the Declaration of Independence on behalf of New Jersey. Annis Stockton, his wife, named the house Morven after a mythical Gaelic kingdom in Ireland. After signing the Declaration of Independence, Richard Stockton was captured by the British and detained in a prison in New York. At this time, the commanding British general in New Jersey, Lord Cornwallis, occupied Morven, destroying most of its contents. Weeks later, Washington crossed the Delaware and won critical battles at Trenton and Princeton (Princeton Battlefield State Park is about a mile southeast of Morven). The war would end when Cornwallis surrendered to Washington at Yorktown over four years later. After the Revolutionary War, Morven remained the possession of the Stockton family for over 150 years. In 1928, the family leased Morven to Robert Wood Johnson Jr., long-time chairman of Johnson & Johnson. Johnson added the pool house, beside which the ceremony will take place. At the end of Johnson's lease, the Stockton family sold Morven to New Jersey Governor Walter Edge, who in turn gifted the property to the State of New Jersey. Morven served as the governor's mansion from 1945-1982. In 1962, John F. Kennedy stayed overnight at Morven after making an appearance at a midterm campaign event. In 1982, Drumthwacket, a half mile down the street from Morven took over as the governor's mansion. Today, Morven serves as a public museum, garden, and community space.

Answer

Garden Party Formal For ladies, tea-length dresses or long dresses are appropriate and for men, a suit and tie (or bow-tie) is perfect. Think florals, pastels, and fun spring hues. And, as our ceremony and reception will take place outdoors, please keep in mind that many areas will be on grass. We recommend choosing footwear accordingly, such as block heels, wedges, flats, or dress shoes suitable for walking on the lawn.
