いちごいちえ Ichi-go Ichi-e

A Tokyo Teahouse Proposal 4.9.18

Josh and Grace went on a bit of an impromptu trip to Japan for fun (or so Grace thought) to meet Grace's parents when they were living in Singapore. On the second day of the trip, Josh and Grace were planning to go to a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony at an ancient Teahouse in Tokyo. Josh had done most of the planning on this but Grace didn't think anything of it. After learning Japanese calligraphy from the Tea Master, whose grandmother had poured tea for the previous Emperor, the tea ceremony commenced. The Tea Master led the ceremony, then taught Grace and Josh how to pour for each other. When Josh was pouring the second round of tea for Grace, they brought out a scroll. On the scroll Josh had written a sweet letter about the significance of the tea ceremony and how it relates to our relationship, focusing on this idea of Ici-go Ichi-e. It is an old Japanese proverb that means “In this moment, Never Again.” It can also be interpreted as “one chance in a lifetime" or "We'll never have this moment again but it will last forever". After Grace Read the scroll, the Tea Master (who was in on it the whole time) presented the "last sweet" which was under a beautiful cloth. When Josh lifted the cloth there was a beautiful oragami rose with the engagement rings. It was so sweet to have the Tea Master and the Translator there to be overjoyed for us as well in that moment clapping in the background.
