Karpenissi
Wander around in Karpenisi. Take a stroll in the small streets surrounding the city center and discover the marble square of Markos Mpotsaris, its stone fountains and the church of the Holy Trinity built in the 17th century before stopping for an afternoon break at a taverna to enjoy the local cuisine, which includes country sausages with leek, river trouts, the famous cheese "tsalafouti" and "mouro", a local distillate reminiscent of greek tsipouro.
Panta Vrechei
Visit the famous gorge of Panra Vrechei. Centuries-old plane trees, crystal clear springs, running waters and imposing waterfalls formed by the waters of Krikelopotamos, compose the magical landscape of this well-known gorge, which translates to "it always rains". Megalo Chorio
If you are a fan of hiking, we got you covered as well with a number of clearly marked paths to explore. Hiking enthusiasts swear by the name of the path that connects Megalo Chorio with Gavros, another quaint little village next to the bank of Krikelopotamos. The journey takes about an hour, and passes between age-old plane trees and willows, crystal clear streams and gurgling springs. Another nice route is the one that starts from Neo Mikro Chorio and follows the forest road under the fir trees for two hours, until it ends in the village of Nostimo, with the amazing view of the gorge.
Megdovas
For water lovers, let Tavropos (also know as Megdovas) and Trikeriotis rivers fascinate you with their rapid waterways. Sailing down Trikeriotis River will give an adrenaline rush to rafting fans whereas Tavropos River is a pleasant waterway for those less advanced or even for beginners. If you are looking for calmer waters, then Kremaston Lake is the best option for you as its serenity and out of sight natural beauty will definitely win you over. It is a fine swimming destination in the summer and great for canoeing or kayaking all year round.
Iera Moni Prousou
Make time to visit the historic Monastery of Panagia Prousiotissa, which is perched on the steep cliffs of Prousos. Built in the 12th century, it's one of the most important pilgrimage centers of Orthodoxy as it hosts the miraculous icon of Panagia Prousiotissa, a work of the Evangelist Luke. Apart from the ecclesiastical relics, Byzantine icons and a part of the armament of the greek hero Georgios Karaiskakis, the local delicacy of the organic prosciutto made of a black indigenous breed of swine is another reason to pay a visit to this evergreen village. Additionally, go for a stroll to nearby Kefalovryso, and take a short rest on the stone bench under the age-old plane trees. Within a short distance you can visit the traditionally built Koryschades village and the Museum of National Resistance.
Black Cave Spring
The Black Cave is located in one of the most impressive gorges of Evritania and is about 2 km from the village of Prousos where the famous monastery of Panagia Prousiotissa is located. It is a secret place where the inhabitants of the area took refuge in difficult historical times, during the Turkish occupation and the period of the German occupation. The only remnant since then is a stone wall that almost blocks the entrance to the cave. Noweadays, the hideout in the gorge of Mavri Spilia is considered a top attraction in Evritania. It is a favorite stop for travelers who visit the monastery of Panagia Prousiotissa and love nature walks.
Kremasta
Lake Kremasta is the largest and perhaps the most beautiful artificial lake in Greece. It was created in the 60's as a result of the construction of the Kremasta hydroelectric dam and is continuously supplied by the rivers Acheloos, Agrafiotis, Tavropou and Trikerioti. It is located between the prefectures of Etoloakarnania and Evritania, which are connected to the Episkopi Bridge, is about 60 km from Agrinio and about 55 km from Karpenisi. The incomparable beauty of the lake with the turquoise waters, the fjords that are created but also the numerous small islands that stand scattered will really enchant any visitor, making them think that they are in an exotic destination.
