Travel & Tips

We're so excited to celebrate with you in the charming city of Porto! To make your stay as delightful as possible, we've curated some insider tips and travel suggestions to help you navigate the city. Additionally, I’ve created a google document at the bottom of the page that dives even deeper into all the best spots—from where to sip on the finest Port wine to discovering hidden gems that truly capture the spirit of Porto. Hopefully this guide will help you experience the city like a local. Let’s make your visit unforgettable!

Rental Car

Renting a Car

Driving in Porto is pretty straightforward and same in the US—drivers are on the left side of the car and drive on the right side of the road. Just make sure to request an automatic car unless you’re comfortable with manual, as many cars here are manual. Keep in mind that the streets can be narrow and cobblestone, which adds a bit of adventure to driving! We don't recommend renting a car unless you're planning on exploring cities outside of Porto. You can easily get around the city by walking or getting an Uber/Bolt

Train

Getting to Porto by Train

Another great option for traveling to Porto is by Comboio (the Portuguese word for train). There are regular train connections between major Portuguese cities, as well as international train routes to Porto from France and Spain. If you choose to travel by train, keep in mind that you can purchase tickets in the station or through this website: https://www.cp.pt/passageiros For your local destination in Porto, shoot for São Bento Train Station (this the closest station to the city's center). But if you happen to be arriving on an international train, it's best to arrive in Campanhã, Porto's central train station.

Travel Note

Rideshare: Uber & Bolt

Porto is best explored on foot as the city’s charm is in its streets. However, if you've exhausted your cardio, rideshares are relatively inexpensive in Porto as you can utilize Uber or Bolt to get around town.

Porto Neighborhoods

Ribeira & Baixa These are two fantastic, centrally located areas to stay in while in Porto. They’re popular with tourists, which means they can be busy, but they’re perfect if you’re only in town for a short time. Ribeira is the most charming and classic part of Porto, though it’s also the busiest. Located downhill from many top sites, you’ll want to wear comfortable shoes if you stay here! Baixa, on the other hand, offers a bit more nightlife, so it can be louder at night. Both areas are packed with great restaurants, bars, and coffee shops—all within walking distance. Vila Nova de Gaia Consider Vila Nova de Gaia the more hipster side of Porto! Just across the river from the more touristy parts of the city, it’s an easy ferry ride or quick Uber from central Porto. Here, you’ll find historic port warehouses and cellars dating back to the 17th century, along with gorgeous views. It’s not as crowded with tourists, but keep in mind it’s not as walkable to some of the main sites—so there are pros and cons.

Must See Places Outside of Porto

Douro Valley The Douro Valley is a must if you have a bit more time in Portugal. Known for its stunning terraced vineyards and winding river, this region is the heart of port wine production. Whether you’re up for a day trip or an overnight stay, you’ll love the laid-back vibe, scenic boat rides, and stunning views. Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês Portugal’s only national park that covers multiple mountain ranges & spills into Spain with Roman ruins, waterfalls and small villages throughout. Guimarães The OG capital of Portugal! Folded into the mountains and now a Unesco World Heritage Site. Wander through its cobbled streets, explore the ancient castle, and soak in the old-world vibe. It’s a smaller, quieter spot that gives you a real feel for Portugal’s rich past.
