Frederick and Surrounding areas

Here are some of our top recommendations: Frederick, Maryland – Local Charm & History Frederick has a vibrant downtown filled with historic architecture, unique shops, and great food. Historic Downtown Frederick – Explore cobblestone streets, boutique shops, art galleries, and plenty of local cafes and breweries. Local Breweries & Wineries – Frederick is well-known for its craft beer and local wineries, perfect for an afternoon tasting. Nearby Adventures – Nature & Small Towns If you have extra time, there are some wonderful spots just a short drive from Frederick: Harpers Ferry, West Virginia – A picturesque historic town set at the meeting of two rivers with stunning views and trails. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania – A must-visit for history lovers, with fascinating Civil War sites and museums.

Just over an hour from Frederick, Washington, D.C. is perfect for a day trip. Most museums and landmarks are free to visit, making it easy to explore. Stroll the National Mall to see iconic sights like the U.S. Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, and Washington Monument. Don’t miss the Smithsonian Museums, which are world-class and completely free — from natural history to space exploration and art. A personal favourite is the Smithsonian National Zoo, where Tara used to work — it’s a must-see for animal lovers and a great family activity. Other highlights include wandering through Georgetown, with its historic canal and charming streets, and walking around the Tidal Basin to visit beautiful memorials like Jefferson, Martin Luther King Jr., and FDR.

Baltimore, MD

Just over an hour from Frederick, start your visit at the Inner Harbor, a lively area packed with attractions like the National Aquarium (where Tara interned back in high school), historic ships, and museums. For history buffs, Fort McHenry National Monument is a must-see — it’s where the Star-Spangled Banner was inspired during the War of 1812. Baseball fans might also enjoy catching a game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, one of the most beloved stadiums in the U.S. Baltimore is also known for its charming neighbourhoods. Fells Point has cobblestone streets, historic pubs, and lively music spots, while Federal Hill offers scenic views of the harbour. If you’re a seafood lover, don’t leave without trying Maryland’s famous blue crabs or a classic crab cake. With its mix of waterfront fun, rich history, and eclectic culture, Baltimore makes a fantastic half-day or full-day trip from Frederick.

About 90 minutes from Frederick, Annapolis is Maryland’s charming state capital and a paradise for anyone who loves history, sailing, or picturesque waterfront views. This area is one of Nick and Tara's favorite stops when they are stateside! Known as the Sailing Capital of the U.S., Annapolis is home to the U.S. Naval Academy, where you can take guided tours to learn about naval history and see impressive historic buildings. Stroll through Historic Downtown Annapolis, where brick-lined streets are filled with boutique shops, cafes, and galleries. The waterfront area is perfect for watching sailboats drift by or enjoying a harbour cruise. Annapolis has a relaxed, coastal charm that makes it ideal for a day trip. Whether you’re exploring the harbour, soaking up the maritime atmosphere, or enjoying fresh seafood, it’s a perfect getaway that feels worlds apart from the bustle of the city.
