It was a bright summer day in 2014 at the North East river in Maryland. Both Juliet and Gabe had driven to a mutual friend's get-together. Neither of them knew more than a few people at the party, as Juliet had just moved to Delaware from her native Peru six months before and Gabe recently moved to Washington, DC to start a new job. Together, they hopped into a two-person kayak and set off across the river. On the journey, they bonded over conversation, chatting about Latin America where Gabe had lived as a Peace Corps volunteer years before and sharing stories of adapting to their new homes. They began trekking two hours down the highway to see each other on weekends, which would evolve into a semi-long distance relationship of 2 1/2 years. Then, in 2017, Juliet moved to DC and they were together in the same place for the first time, where they have stayed ever since!
It was the last day of a perfect vacation in Mallorca, Spain, full of hiking around seaside towns, bathing in the turquoise water of the island's "Cala" bays and sipping gazpacho. Juliet, eager to test out her new camera, set out across the lava rock surrounding the hotel to capture the sunset, and Gabe followed, ring tucked into his swimsuit pocket. He ushered Juliet away from other sunset-gazing tourists to a private nook, where he dropped down on one knee despite the jagged lava rock below! Luckily, Juliet accepted and they enjoyed the beautiful sunset together!
