Kind of the hottest spot in town with a “scene” (meaning more upscale restaurants with youngish clientele), but it gets mixed reviews such as “food isn’t THAT good.” If it’s your first time in Croatia, the food will be good, don’t worry :) Get dressed up for sure, and you need a reservation!
Mediterranean cuisine right on the famous Riva- a unique experience in a 1700-year-old setting. Sit on the balcony for some incredible views of the ocean! Right next to the entrance to Diocletian's basements from Riva (South Gate).
Great place for fancy cocktails because the interior is amazing! Doesn’t feel like you’re in Croatia. More pricey but right on Riva with leather chairs, distinct style.
The only island I would recommend for a day trip would be Brac, just because of the time it takes to get to the islands. If you’re taking a speedboat, then you could also do Hvar. Sometimes there is a good option to also stop in Hvar on the backside (Split to Bol, Brac to Jelsa, Hvar and back to Split). Jelsa has great ice cream (best spot is on the corner and on google as Ice Cream Caffe Jelsa ) and a seaside walk to swimming spots. As far as Brac though, they will likely take you to Bol where you can visit Zlatni Rat beach (beach chairs, food stands, outdoor lounges with house-style vibes, could spend a few hours). This is a nice 20-minute walk from Bol through the trees. Back in Bol (where the boat drops you), there is also the Stina winery right at the start of the seaside walkway, which would be a great place to stop, and there is great swimming just at the edge of the seaside walkway - a beautiful cove by a church (Crkva sv. Ivan i Teodor) and Dominikanska plaža.
There are a lot of historical sights in the area - Solin (Roman ruins), Trogir, Klis fortress (Game of Thrones filming site).
People don't usually do day trips, they usually rent for a full week. However, there are sometimes day sails. Usually sailboats will have a sign on them, so just walk the Riva to look for those!
Go check out the view at the top of Marjan Hill. It’s also a beautiful forest and if you walk through it to the furthest point, you’ll get an amazing sunset and coastal view! You can easily navigate to your first stop on this adventure by mapping yourself to Teraca Vidilica for a coffee. Our advice- wake up somewhat early, bring a pack lunch, head up to the cafe, get the city views from the cafe, keep walking up to the top viewpoint (Vrh Telegrin), then take the road on the left side of Marjan Hill down to Joe’s Beach bar and swim/have cocktails. You can also take a taxi or walk back to town in the afternoon. You can also do this in reverse to catch the sunset and then head down to the cafe for a night view of the city.
If you want a grueling but GORGEOUS hike, we would recommend taking an Uber/bus down to Omis and hiking up to the fortress (Tvrđava Starigrad-Fortica). It’s basically straight up but the view down below to the seaside and into the canyon is worth it, and there is a big beach in Omis to lay out in the afternoon before heading back. There is also a gourmet dessert place hidden in the very local town (I Gemelli). It’s a different view of Croatia/the area - more local, more mountainous. Even as you arrive into Omis, the view of the cliff as you go across the bridge will be stunning. Don’t let someone convince you into rafting at that time - that river leading into the sea is calm in summer, but it’s cool if you have the time!
