This lake was a place we visited last time we were in Athens. You can pop in and walk around or rent chairs for the day to enjoy swimming in the lake! There is a bar and restaurant onsite and there is an admission fee to enter. I have linked their website for more information. Here is the google description: Lake Vouliagmeni, in the heart of the Athenian Riviera, is the hidden treasure of Attica’s nature. Situated on an idyllic landscape, this rare geological phenomenon is waiting to be discovered. The lake’s brackish waters which are continuously replenished both by the sea and the underground thermal springs offer a natural and unique thermal spa experience.
If you are in Athens for an extra day or two, we highly recommend taking a trip down the Athenian coast to Cape Sounion and visit the Temple of Poseidon. There are many bars and restaurants along the way. As you drive along the coast, there are many scenic views too! It is best at sunset (in our opinion). The temple does close after dark so make sure you arrive BEFORE sunset if you do make the trip. Walk around the site or relax at the onsite restaurant as the sun is setting. This is a solid 1 hour drive from where we'll be but again so worth it if you have the time to make the trip.
If you want to travel into the city, The Plaka is the oldest section of Athens. The streets are closed to most traffic so it's a nice area to walk around. There are many cafes, shops and restaurants on some cute streets. It's a touristy area, but the last time we visited we popped into a restaurant just outside the Parthenon and had a great meal. Just be weary of tourist traps and use your best judgement - take a look at the menus before, and look around at the crowd thats eating. If someone is outside encouraging you to come eat that's usually a good indication to pass.
We spent every night in this area of Athens last time we visited. You'll find shops, restaurants, ice cream shops, bars. I would highly recommend not to eat at any place that looks to be some type of Greek chain restaurant. There are plenty of great local spots within walking distance of the square. The best part about this area is the many rooftop bars. If you're looking for a night cap, this is the place to be! Cafe 360 was our favorite. The views were unreal.
Home of the famous Parthenon. It is a decent walk from bottom to top, just under 1 km and in August it will be HOT. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes. Go early in the day or in the evening (it is open until 8pm). We got there around 10am and there was a line to get in which you could be waiting on for some time. I am linking a blog post with details on prepaying and 'skip the line' passes. I definitely recommend booking ahead of time. It's not impossible to go on a whim but be ready to wait for about an hour during busy season. Once inside, there's different paths you can explore but don't expect anywhere to be totally empty. The line when you're at the top looks insane but this part is quick and once you're inside there's plenty of space to walk around. After all, it is the most famous place in Greece. If you plan to go into town, I think it's worth it. Walk off all the gyros you're consuming and take in some ancient history. Enjoy!!
Flisvos Marina is located at the heart of the Athenian Riviera on the south coast of Greece’s capital city, Athens, in the charming neighbourhood, Palaio Faliro. Approximately 6km from the Athens city centre and the Acropolis, Palaio Faliro, the popular seaside town, has long been a go-to destination for its coastal promenade ideal for leisurely walks and strolls, jogs and bike rides along its breathtaking urban beachfront. Since its opening, Flisvos Marina ushered in a new era for the city and its host town adding a touch of maritime glamour and luxury to the rich-in-nautical history area.
Organized beach, bar and restaurant.
A more upscale option for an organized beach. This is the beach club at the Four Seasons hotel so expect higher prices.
Beach/Bar/Restaurant
Beach/Bar/Restaurant
Another option for an organized beach. This is a bit pricier and I know you must reserve online ahead of time and can also see pricing which many of the other beach websites do not offer.
Beach with chairs and umbrellas for rental. There is no free entry option unless you are staying at the Divani Apollon Hotel. Food/bar/waitress services and watersports at this organized beach. We went to this beach last time we visited and had a great day but there are 'nicer' beaches in terms of the water. There's also a cute restaurant right next door which is recommended below, PAPAIOANNOU Restaurant in Vouliagmeni. We did not have to reserve ahead of time but we arrived early and things may change so check before you go.
Local Greek Taverna
Local Greek Taverna, souvlaki, gyros, etc...
Taverna vibes Waterfront Seafood restaurant
Upscale waterfront seafood restaurant
Beachfront restaurant. The two locations that would be an option are Vouliagmeni (closest and beachfront) and Pireaus which is on a Marina closer to the city. Their third location is much further north of the city so we do not recommend traveling to that one as it is too far (in Kifissia).
Seafood restaurant
Mediterranean restaurant at the Four Seasons hotel so more upscale dining.
Seafood restaurant, same owners as Nobu in the states; so nice, upscale
