Eh Haole, no be dumb. Leave yo slippuhz at da door. AKA, for all the white people; tradition in Hawaii is that you leave your shoes at the door. Let's be respectful to the property owners and make sure to remove our shoes before entering any of the houses at Ala Kukui.
Verizon is the best cellular carrier in Hāna in terms of signal strength and service area. AT&T and Sprint work in most areas, however signal strength is weaker.
In keeping with the retreat atmosphere, there is no wifi available at the main retreat house and cabins. However, if there is a need to use wifi, the main office, located below the main retreat house and in the same building as the hālau and Kapueokahi Apartment, has free wifi available for use.

Poke is a well known Hawaiian snack that has made its way to the mainland. It's a traditional fish salad with tomatoes, onions and other toppings. The selection at Foodland is good (always get the fresh option, it's not frozen). Tamura's in Kahului is also great. Try it in a rice bowl to make it a larger snack or a lunch option.
No, four-wheel drive is NOT necessary for the road too Hana. BUT, there are some things to know before you take your journey: Have a full tank of gas. Bring some food even though you'll encounter roadside carts. Obey the speed limit (25 mph); cops patrol the road heavily. Watch out for the tourists meandering on the road. Be wary of other traffic and narrow bridges. Stop and enjoy the beauty every once in awhile.
The trip to Hana, straight through is about 2.5 hours long. Add additional time for any stops you might want to make along the way.
