The home of the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. Monticello has increasingly improved over the years with their representation of his mottled history, including the extensive archeological excavation of Mulberry Row, the living quarters of his slaves. There is also The Highlands just minutes away, the home of James Monroe, and approximately 45 minutes north is Montpelier, the home of James Madison.
Stinson - one of our current favorites, it is the smallest on this list. It has a cute tasting room, great view of vineyard and blue ridge, and great wine. Pippin Hill - gorgeous tasting room, good view, good wine. Kings Family - debateably best view, decent wine. Good to pair with Stinson or with Pollak because it is relatively close to both. Pollak - has really good wine, not as good view as Kings or Pippin but close enough to either of those if you wanted to go to multiple. Barboursville - large tasting offering with many wines so you just need the one visit instead of going to two wineries which is good cause it’s not really near any others we’d recommend. Great for if you wanted to go while enroute to or from DC. Merrie Mill Farm - new vineyard very close to our home, we like the white, the red is okay, but the venue is incredibly fun. Honorable mentions: Veritas, Flying Fox.
Local Breweries - both Champion and Three Notch'd are walking distance from the Downtown Mall, if you enjoy craft beer we recommend both of these. Local Cideries - Bold Rock (tasting room at Carter's Mountain and their bigger location is 45 minutes SW of town), Castle Hill, Albemarle Ciderworks and Potter's Craft are all in the area. Local Sake - North American Sake Brewery is located directly under Three Notch'd.
Okay, yes our wedding is there, but hear us out. It is one of our favorite restaurants in town and going back to try their dinner would be well worth it. Their whole menu is great, we recommend the stuffed squash, truffle mushroom ragout, gnocchi bolognese, and steak frites.
