Worth the Wait

Middle school classmates, woodshop rivals and over a decade of friendship - until one wild Fourth of July and four simple dates turned a lifelong friendship into our favorite love story

If someone had told us back in high school that we would one day be getting married, we both would have laughed. We’ve known each other since middle school, but our friendship really took off over the sawdust and friendly rivalry of high school woodshop. Between competing for the best project grades and navigating typical teenage misunderstandings, we firmly cemented ourselves in the friend zone. Years later, our moms even tried setting us up on a date, but it ended in an awkward disaster that convinced us romance was completely off the table. We stayed good friends for years until one fateful Fourth of July barbecue changed everything. While sitting together, our friend Raymond bluntly asked, "So, why aren't the two of you married?" John made a quick escape, leaving Faith behind for an epic interrogation from afternoon daylight straight through the fireworks. Raymond challenged everything we thought we knew about our friendship, insisting that real love is an intentional choice you make every day—and he dared us to give it four dates. Once we looked at each other with open eyes, everything clicked. Our first date went great, but our second date—kayaking out on the water—was the game-changer. John surprised Faith with a picnic basket filled entirely with food tailored to her strict diet, showing a level of care and thoughtfulness she had never experienced. Later, as Faith pointed her kayak straight into a thick patch of river reeds and said, "Let’s go in there," John followed without hesitation, realizing he would happily follow this girl anywhere. A year after that Fourth of July barbecue, John brought our families together on a trip to Delaware, surprised Faith by arranging for her best friend to be there, and got down on one knee. It took us more than a decade, a meddling friend, and a little push in the right direction, but we finally figured out what was true all along: the right person had been standing right there the whole time.
