The South Yuba River is the crown jewel of the Sierra Foothills. Known for its crystal-clear turquoise pools and massive, smooth granite boulders, it’s the perfect place to reset and soak in the Northern California sun. What to Expect: The Vibe: Relaxed and rugged. Cell service is limited to non-existent, making it a true escape. The Water: Refreshingly cold (fed by snowmelt!) but perfect for a hot summer day. The Terrain: Expect short but sometimes steep or rocky hikes down to the water from the parking areas. What to Bring: Sturdy Shoes: Trails can be steep and dusty; granite rocks can be slippery. Save the flip-flops for the water’s edge. Sun Protection: The sun reflects off the white granite. Bring hats and eco-friendly sunscreen. Hydration & Snacks: There are no concessions at the river, so pack plenty of water and snacks. Leave No Trace: Please pack out everything you pack in—let's keep the river beautiful!
The Falls is one of camps two waterfalls on site. It is fed by Rock Creek, which originates in the Tahoe area. A short hike down the hill, it is a great place to bring some snacks and enjoy the water. This hike does involve some scrambling down the hill so I recommend closed toes shoes.
Even if you aren’t staying at the National Exchange Hotel, you definitely need to grab a meal at Lola. Named after the town’s most famous (and scandalous) 19th-century resident, Lola Montez, this place is the heart of the hotel’s recent makeover. It feels like a mix of an old Victorian parlor and a high-end modern bistro. What to Expect: The Setting: It is arguably the most beautiful dining room in town. Think massive gold chandeliers, floor-to-ceiling windows, and deep teal velvet booths. It’s definitely "Instagram-worthy," but it still feels cozy and welcoming. The Food: It’s upscale but not stuffy. They do "French-influenced American" food, which basically means really high-quality versions of classics. My Advice: If you can’t snag a full dinner reservation, just walk in and try to grab a seat at the bar or one of the lounge tables. You get the same great menu and can soak in the atmosphere with a cocktail or a glass of local wine.
If you’re looking for the true "flavor" of Nevada City, Three Forks is the place to be. This beloved local hub is part artisanal bakery, part craft brewery, and part farm-to-table restaurant—all housed in a bright, bustling space in the heart of downtown. Why We Love It: The Wood-Fired Oven: They are famous for their sourdough pizzas and fresh breads, all baked right in the dining room's massive wood-fired oven. Craft Beer & Cider: They brew their own beer in small batches and offer a curated selection of local ciders and wines. Local First: Their menu changes weekly to highlight whatever is freshest from the surrounding Sierra Foothill farms. The Treats: Even if you aren't staying for a meal, their pastry case is legendary. Grab a coffee and a "morning bun" or a seasonal fruit galette for your stroll through town. Good to Know: The Vibe: Casual, communal, and very "Nevada City." It’s a popular spot, so there might be a short line, but it’s always worth the wait!
