Skyline Drive runs 105 miles north and south along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park, taking a total of about three hours to drive. There are many scenic viewpoints and hikes along the way. Note, you do need to pay the National Park entrance fee to drive Skyline Drive.
Old Rag is a classic, but strenuous Shenandoah National Park hike. If you are interested in doing this hike, you will need a day-use ticket, which are available on the National Parks website. Be sure to plan ahead as this is a popular hike!
Luray caverns are a fun attraction for kids, families, and those interested in geology! Tickets are available in advance or at the entrance of the caverns.
Set on a 130-year-old farm, Mountain Run is a quintessential family-operated farm winery. Opened in 2016, Mountain Run quickly became known for its charming pastoral setting, friendly service, and wide range of award-winning wines, beers, meads, and hard cider. Both kid and dog friendly, and with a playground to boot. The tasting room is open Friday, Saturday, and Sundays from noon-7:00 pm.
The unique design features nine challenging par-3 holes, ranging in length from 85-171 yards. The course meanders through a series of native wildflower meadows bordered by the Thornton River and the historic ruins of the original Smoot Tannery.
This rock climbing gym is a non-profit invested in the local community. Day passes are available from Saturday to Thursday for $20 and Fridays are pay what you like. Kids are welcome.
