Scott's Addition is an up-and-coming neighborhood in Richmond, known mostly for its breweries. Scott's was Emma's first home when she moved to Richmond and where we did long distance for our first 1.5 years of our relationship. Scotts Addition is one of our favorite Saturday places to visit with our friends and each other. Our favorite spots are Star Hill Brewing, Ardent Craft Ales, Wood & Iron (sports bar), and River City Roll (bar/bowling alley).
Brown's Island/Belle Isle are a couple of our favorite places to explore on the river. We go there to spend time with friends, see the sights, and spend some time in nature. This was one of our favorite spots to go during COVID lockdowns to get some fresh air. When it isn't the summer concert series, Friday Cheers, we can be found hiking and biking around the river. Joe loves to share the knowledge he has learned about the history of Richmond as we see foundational parts of the city. Our favorites are the Canal Walk/Murals, T. Pot. Bridge and hiking around the river. If you are looking for a hike (six miles): https://www.hikingupward.com/OVH/JamesRiver/ P.S. - this is right downtown near all the hotels!
A year after Joe moved to Richmond, we found our first home in the Museum District. This area of Richmond is known for its architecture and local museums - the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts being one of our favorites. We have many memories of spending spring and summer Friday evenings having drinks with friends on its beautiful lawn. We highly recommend taking a stroll through! The VMFA holds an extra special place in our hearts because we walked over to celebrate and take photos the evening we got engaged. Our favorites are the VMFA and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. And Buddys. Don't forget Buddy's.
Carytown is an artistic, quaint, corner of Richmond just south of the museum district. It's full of restaurants, bars, shops, festivals, and ultimately the ploy for our engagement. Each year, Carytown has an annual Watermelon Festival. They shut down the road and have live music, delicious food from local vendors, shopping, and watermelon for $1. We were specifically looking forward to it this past year since we were finally within walking distance, even though it was the night before Emma's first day of school. While we were sitting on the porch getting ready to leave, Joe kneeled and got on one knee while asking, "Are you ready for a big question?" No surprise here - we missed the Carytown Watermelon Festival. And Emma cried. A lot. Our favorite places to visit are the New York Deli, Mongrel Book Shop, Byrd Theatre, and Bev's Ice Cream (Shoutout Grandma Babs!)
