Silas grew up in Ferndale, CA—small agriculture-based town here in Humboldt. He went on to play football at HSU which brought him all over the west coast, and eventually to Europe where he played abroad. Emily grew up in Petersburg, AK—a small island and tight-knit fishing community in southeast Alaska. She went to California for college where she went to Chico State and had the chance to live in Hawaii and Spain for school, to be followed by years of travel. As Silas returned home to Humboldt, he began working and soon went back to school to earn his MBA—throughout this whole mix Silas had landed at Cypress Grove working as their supply chain manager. Emily moved to San Francisco after school, and eventually moved up to Humboldt where Javi had more room to run on the beach. She always thought she'd be 'leaving soon'. She was faced with a job choice that could take her down to San Diego, or accept a job here in Humboldt with Cypress Grove. One day at work, Silas caught a glance of someone new. Emily began her role with Cypress Grove in 2017. As a marketing manager, Emily and Silas often had to work together on the logistics of the many events that Emily managed. Silas was quickly impressed by Emily's drive and smarts, and also somewhat annoyed by the recent uptick in workload this created for him. This is where Silas and Emily became friends, along with many other great people at Cypress Grove. Silas eventually asked Emily to meet him for a drink one night, and at that first outing Silas knew Emily was the one. Emily followed soon after, and as they say—the rest is history.
It was the first big downpour of the year, but we were desperate for the "getting out feeling" — you know, how we've all been at home...for the last year? So we were craving adventure despite the rain. We geared up, and set out for a day in the great outdoors we are lucky to call home. We ended up driving up Bald Hills road to the very last hike, about 17 miles up to Lyons Ranch Trail—it was new for both us. The scenery was much different than the beach and redwood hikes we are used to—vast hillsides and valley views for days. The sky cleared for most of our journey up, with rolling white clouds and sunbeams finding their way down. It was business as usual until we were about to head back down, and I turned around to see Silas on one knee, with gentle yearning eyes. It took longer than it should have to believe the moment that was in front of me, so long that my mind could only register the words "Emily" & "will you marry me?". Everything before and after drifted off into the views. We were beaming with excitement on the way down—and it began to DOWNPOUR. Made for a memorable, soaking wet, notebook-esque day we will always remember.
