Emily met Erich at the end of the aisle at Patrick Dohony and Erin Collington's wedding rehearsal. They didn't talk much again until they were announced as a bridesmaid and groomsman pair at the reception the next day. They clicked immediately - Erich loved asking about Emily's "Irish blue eyes" that evening. He eventually invited Emily back to the family Airbnb, where the Gerckes were doing Disney karaoke. In a bid to impress her, Erich picked "My Shot" from Hamilton, and luckily Emily was more than ready to back him up. Mary Lou even admitted to wondering if she had actually met her daughter-in-law.
Early in their relationship, Emily and Erich took walks around cemeteries for fun, like the famous Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and Old Dutch Burying Ground in Tarrytown, New York where the Legend of the Headless Horseman takes place. After receiving a "grave-rubbing" kit as a gift, Erich had the bright idea of a "grave-rubbing proposal". It wasn't until the week of the planned proposal that Emily informed Erich that grave-rubbing is illegal and has been for decades. (It turns out that "grave-rubbing kit" was from 1972.) Erich had already designed and constructed a custom tombstone and he wasn't going to let it go to waste. With a little bit of paint and charcoal, the gravestone was ready to be placed in the cemetery at Westminster Hall, where Edgar Allan Poe is buried. Upon stumbling upon the tombstone, Emily's first thought was "Hmm, that dead person has my exact name."
