Dress Code

We are so excited to see everyone in traditional Indian attire for the Indian events! Since it will be many of our guests' first Indian wedding, we wanted to provide some ideas about what to wear and where to purchase these outfits. These are just a few options to get you started - we welcome all the different styles of Indian attire. If you have any questions, text us!

Lehenga

Women's Attire

Lehengas are one of the most popular and widely available options for Indian weddings. They consist of three pieces: a long, embroidered skirt (the lehenga), a fitted blouse (choli), and a dupatta (scarf or shawl).

Kurta Pajama

Men's Attire

A kurta pajama is a traditional Indian outfit consisting of a long, loose-fitting tunic (the kurta) and a pair of comfortable trousers (the pajama). To make the outfit more formal, a vest or scarf can be added.

Saree

Women's Attire

A saree (also spelled sari) is a stretch of woven fabric arranged over the body as a dress. They are available pre-stitched/ready to wear which we highly recommend (so much easier!). Sarees are commonly worn over a fitted blouse (choli) with a petticoat (slip) underneath.

Sherwani

Men's Attire

The sherwani is a long coat-like garment buttoned up to the collar and typically worn over a pair of straight-cut or more fitted trousers (churidar). It is seen as more formal than the kurta, featuring a collar and often more embellishments. Two similar types of coat, the achkan and the Nehru jacket, can also be worn - they vary slightly in length and overall design.

Sharara

Women's Attire

A sharara is a three-piece outfit consisting of wide legged, flared pants, a tunic (kurta), and a scarf (dupatta). The pants dramatically flare out from the knees, giving the sharara an elegant, skirt-like appearance.

Salwar Kameez

Women's Attire

A Salwar Kameez, also known as an Indian suit, is a women's outfit typically consisting of a tunic (kameez), trousers (salwar), and a scarf (dupatta).

Dress Code FAQ

______

Where should I shop? We've put together a list of some online and in-person stores - just copy and paste this link into your browser: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jLClD9AhCvIjo7haTPiIx2Xx0Ddkeo5oIVXrw8gYwvk/edit?usp=sharing Should I wear Indian attire to all 3 events? Indian attire is not required for the Saturday evening Christian ceremony, as the dress code is black tie optional. We would love for our guests to dress in Indian attire for at least the Sangeet, but both Indian attire and formal attire will be appropriate for the Saturday morning Indian ceremony. There are lots of outfit options listed here - how do I know which style to choose? These are just suggestions - please wear whichever you feel most comfortable in. :) Or if you find an Indian style that isn't listed above that you love, we love that too! Do I need to cover my head? No head coverings or turbans are required! Any specific shoes or accessories I should wear with my Indian attire? Nope - anything is great! Feel free to finish off your look with bold and vibrant jewelry like statement necklaces and earrings and colorful bangles. Will I get to wear henna? Yes! All women will have the chance to get henna done at the Sangeet. Bindis will also be provided. How early should I buy my outfits? Given the custom nature of some of these stores, we'd recommend purchasing at least 2-3 months ahead of our wedding to be safe.
